I tried avocado...but it gets too cold here even with covering them up. But there are a few avocado trees around town.
Actually in San Antonio...Citrus trees are fairly rare.....they have to be covered for any freezing for about the first 10 years.
My fig trees do well, except you only have a bout a 1 day window to pick them before the bird eat them. I do like my Keifer pear because it is self pollenating.

If it gets below 30 degrees F, Avocado trees will have a hard time. It depends on the type. Some are better than others in colder climates. Fuerte Avocados are a little more cold tolerant than Hass (I think they can go down to about 25 degrees). They're a good tasting avocado as well. Most growers don't grow them because they have a smooth thin skin. As a result, they bruise too easily sitting in bins. We have two mature Fuertes. They're good for cross pollinating with the Hass trees. Plus, the Fuertes are ready to pick in the October to December time frame. So you'd have some mature fruit around the time the frost starts to come.

How do you know when a fig is ready to pick? We have one fig on our tree. It's just now turning color. A friend of mine said he just picked them up when they dropped.

I got the Keifer Pear at Lowes.

Ripe figs - they usually turn brown or dark purple..and get soft. And they must ripen on the tree. They are only ripe for a couple of days and turn to mush and rot. They are pretty much the most expensive fruit you can buy at the store because of their shelf life
    Very good for making jam.

I've got some broccoli and weeds in my garden. Time to get ready for spring soon and get it cleaned up.

Mine's got 4 feet of snow on top of it right now. Probably going to be a couple of months before I need to even think about getting seeds started. :notsure:

Lol. We had almost zero snow prior to last week. December was all warm, rainy weather, and then most of January was just super cold and dry. Then on Tuesday we got 27 inches, Friday we got another 10 inches, yesterday we got another foot, and now they're saying we're getting another storm on Thursday. No totals on that one, though. I'm crossing my fingers it's not a boomer, because I'm going winter camping and leaving on Thursday morning. My GF will just have her Honda, and she refuses to learn how to run the plow truck. So if we get another foot she's going to have to shovel, lol.

Lol. You crazy Southwesterners with your early start on the season. I've still got 4 feet of snow on my front yard, and it was -6 here this morning.

I just got my order from the local seed company on Monday; I haven't even started anything in the mini-greenhouse yet.

The peepers came out on Sunday, so I tilled the garden with the help of my hens, who gobble up every grub in site. Going to order seeds by this weekend.

Weird to think that we just got 6 inches of snow on thursday and lows in the teens, then 60 plus degrees and sunny two days later.
