Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
It has been a hell of a year. No winter (atleast here) and yet freeze warnings and a high of 43° on Saturday. This Coronavirus sh!t. Cancelled and closed everything. Isn't this 2020, can't we just hit a fast forward button on our remote and it happens?

    Yeah, it's a yo-yo season this year. Warm-cold-warm-cold-warm-cold.

It's been in the low 80s here a few days the last couple weeks, today its supposed to be low 50s with rain and tonight and tomorrow night low 30s. Of course I've got a ton of stuff in the garden and coming up :annoyed:. Guess we'll see what happens :frusty:

Got a tarp that'd cover it? Or some plastic sheeting? It won't protect from a hard freeze, but it'll save them if you get frosted.

Yeah, I'm gonna try to find something. My corn, beans, peas, potatoes rows are about 40' each. It's turning out to be a rough first year garden for me. A day or so after I planted the first stuff, it decided to dump rain for a couple days with a few rounds of super heavy rain and I had grand canyon washed out thru the middle of the garden, looked out a couple mornings ago and had 3 deer out in it (hopefully be able to put one of them in the freezer this fall), and now this cold snap. Not to mention all the trouble of finding seeds and plants since apparently everybody in the country decided to put a garden in this year. (in my defense I've been wanting a garden ever since I bought this house, and finally decided to start this year guess the craziness going in around the world was the final push for me)

Don't worry about the peas or potatoes, they can handle the frost. If your peas already have blossoms or pods on them you need to cover them, but plants without blossoms or pods can handle quite a bit of cold.

Other things that can handle frost are: lettuce, spinach, kale, Swiss chard, onions, leeks, garlic, beets, carrots, Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli and probably a few others that I'm not thinking of.

Things that frost will kill: tomatoes, peppers, beans, corn, melons and squash.

Nothing is blooming yet thankfully. Got a couple rows of corn up 3-4 inches and a row of beans up a couple inches. I've got some pots to cover the tomatoes and pepper plants. It's the 40' rows I'm gonna have to get my redneck creativity out for haha

Blankets will also work to cover them. What ever you use make sure it's propped up somehow so the weight of it won't squash the plants.

Speaking of cold, it got down to 24 F here last night. All the stuff in my garden is cold tolerant, but I have peppers and tomatoes planted in my greenhouse. The greenhouse usually stays 4 to 10 degrees warmer then outside air. I have a space heater that I put out there when it gets really cold, and I had it out there last night. Apparently I didn't have it turned up high enough because it got down to 30 inside the greenhouse. Everything looks fine right now, but it can take a few hours for them to start wilting. Fingers crossed.

What a difference plants make. Comparing my back yard from 3 years ago when we had it revamped to now when the plants are growing well.

Planted tomatoes and peppers early this year and I’m paying for it. Freeze warning for the morning low of 28° Fahrenheit. Trying to cover in a 20 mph wind sure was fun.

not necessarily garden related but it is plant related but got an issue. Is there an easy way to get rid of bamboo? our house was an empty lot and the neighbor's bamboo garden decided to overtake a corner of the yard. it was hacked down to the base and left as is. i think i'm going to have to resort to some manual labor but figured I'd ask. the corner of the yard is kind of ugly anyhow and I thought I'd do a small raised garden bed and put in some sort of plants there.

When we bought our “handy man special” in the early 90’s, an old above ground pool in the backyard had to go. I saved the aluminum deck planks and made raised beds.

I did away with the garden when we started a family- I was working all the time so my wife could stay home and raise the children.

I built a few boxes around 2010 so my wife and sister could have a garden, and when the local construction shut down in early April, I decided to add a few more, and add a patio...lol

Still a work in progress, and I really have a lot to learn on the subject.

Well, since the outside apparently isn't quite ready for Spring yet, I'll just keep it inside with me for a little longer.

Ah, the challenges of gardening in the North. I feel your pain brother.

I think I got lucky. The peppers and tomatoes in my greenhouse seem to have survived the 30 F they got a taste of the night before last.

good luck. You have to be persistent, and make sure dig it up the best you can. When that article says root balls, some of those can be hundreds of pounds. Machinery may be needed.

that’s what I’m worried about haha. Thought about doing the buried barrier method and just letting it create its own “bamboo garden”.
