    Argh.
We've got frost here that's at least 5 feet deep this year. January was super cold, with no snow cover to help insulate the ground. The piers/columns under my addition are set 4 feet deep on a 6-inch layer of gravel, and it still froze deep enough to heave the addition almost 2 inches.

Yup. The side that's attached to the house is mounted directly onto the house's foundation, but the outside corners are both set on posts. Right now I can't open either of the doors or any of the windows because they're all wedged in their frames.

No, fortunately the room's finished in wood, so the boards aren't showing any signs of being bothered by it. I'm sure if it was drywalled I'd be ripping my hair out about all of the cracks I was going to have to fix, though.

I went straight ghetto with my garden. We went out and bought a couple of kiddy pools and filled them with fresh soil and got some geenbeans, cucumbers and a couple other things growing. Doesn't look great, but its growing on the side yard which is divided from our backyard so its not real visible. Everything is growing really good as of now, but not sure how its going to do in the long run because those pools are that deep. Also got a couple things growing in pots too.

    I'll post pics.

Great little project for the kids, they sure do get a kick out of seeing everything grow.

Nothing wrong with that. When I lived in an apartment I was gardening out of 5-gallon buckets.
Just make sure you poke some holes in the bottom of those pools, otherwise the first heavy rainstorm will drown your plants.

Yep, I put a bunch of holes in the bottom and it really has been working out great.

Good site for container gardening. Lots of tips and ideas (plus the lady who writes the articles lives right here in Maine!)

Sounds good. Glad to have the much needed rain lately. Going to check on mine tomorrow to see how muddy it is.

I've never gardened anything before but I'm thinking I want to try and grow a few peppers and herbs. I live in an apartment though and my balcony is in the shade a decent amount of the day (north facing), so I'll have to figure that out. I have no idea what I'm doing, so I figure there will be a learning curve.

Should be good for delicate things like a butternut lettuce.idk.
Check with a good nursery in your area. Containers can be a good garden.

Oan, tomatoes faired really good after marble size hail last night.

I'll see if I can get any advice from someone local

Mainly looking at green bell peppers, jalapeños, Rosemary, mint, and maybe some zucchini and celery if I have room. Thought about some beans but they might be a little much for a balcony lol

Awesome. I'll probably still talk to a nursery or something to get some pointers :) in a few years when I buy my own place I'll plant a more serious garden I think. My fiancé is a big vegetable person.. I'm more of a fruit eater but homegrown anything is better (and cheaper).
