Nice. Those beds are deep enough that you could do potatoes really easily, then.

    Pictures!
Frost here again this morning

    Looks like early blight.
When are you watering the plants, and how much? Are you spraying the plants down, or just applying near the base?
Try to avoid watering them when it's cloudy out, and make sure the leaves have time to dry before dark. If the blight keeps getting worse, you can cover the plants with garden cloth at night to keep the dew off of them and that should help.

Edit- I think they also have a fungicide that you can spray on the plants, but not sure what it's called. The local garden center/farmer's union/farm store should be able to tell you if they've got one that'll work.

    That'll do it.
Not sure how much effort you want to put into it, but if you've got some clear plastic or something you could set up a row cover or something to keep the rain off of them. That should help.

Got the garden beds weeded, composted, fertilized and turned over this weekend. Now I just need some warmer weather. It was snowing on me while I was working at one point on Saturday morning.

I haven't broken into the veg gardens or anything yet, but I've got plenty of flowers and trees. Get ready for picture bombs....

Nice! I really enjoy looking at other people's flower gardens and landscaping, but don't maintain much of my own. Closest I get is planting morning glories along the fence line on the front yard and sunflowers in the garden beds. Plus I've got a small box built into the front porch that I keep some flowers in. Nothing big. Well, except for the sunflowers. They get pretty good-sized.

Heh, no kidding. Nothing like walking out onto your porch with your morning coffee and seeing that!

Dang, they definitely do get good sized. I've got a little gap between my redbud and my daisies.... maybe I'll throw some of those in there too for for.

They definitely did well last year. Not sure what was different; I've grown the same variety in the same spot with the same soil for 3 years in a row. Just last year they really took off. :notsure:
BUT...I've been enriching the soil every year since we bought the place, so maybe that's the explanation. I get a couple truckloads of aged manure from the horse farm down the road every fall and till it into the beds along with some compost.

Got some new additions last night. Not exactly gardeners, but they help with pest and weed control, plus provide fertilizer, so they count. :D

Sweet! Sileage corn, or eating corn?
The soil here is still more mud than dirt, unfortunately. My raised beds have dried enough that I got most of my cool-weather tolerant stuff planted this weekend, and I'll be putting out the other stuff this coming weekend, I think. Once I get the hoophouses set up it should be warm enough for them.

    haha..

well i was a young teen.. so hearing the roosters at 5 am every morning at my window would make me want to kill them. i had to power wash the front and back concrete weekly due to them taking the dump where they wanted to. everytime they wandered off to someone elses property i had to go chase them down. and when they were being hunted at night by a coon or possum i had to go out there and shoot the predator.

just stuff i hated doing growing up.

Salmonella's really not a big risk for a small flock; you typically get salmonella outbreaks from large factory-style operations with poor sanitary conditions.
If you're worried about the dog, you can always just build a chicken tractor. It's a portable, small enclosure that you can move around the yard to let them eat grass & bugs (and drop fertilizer) while still keeping them 'penned in' and safe from dogs/cats/small children.

One of the guys at work has some hens - no rooster so no noisy birds. He built a fancy nesting box for them, as well as a secure pen. He lets them out during the day and they haven't had any issues. When they are all laying, we get fresh eggs :hungry:

A lot of residential areas are actually writing ordinances against roosters now that small flock keeping is getting more popular. Fortunately for me I live in the country and nobody gives a sh*t, because my broiler flock usually ends up being about 50% roosters, and they usually start crowing about 2-3 weeks before they go in the freezer.

My parents grow Kandy Korn typically. They haven't been able to plant it yet, though. They turned the plot over with the plow a couple of weekends ago, but the ground's still too wet to harrow.

Never had good luck with the Blue Lakes; I tried them two years in a row with less-than-stellar yields, so I switched to a pole bean (Fortex) last year and got about 3 times more yield out of them.
