If the soil and climate are right I would look hard at azaleas. They like part shade and that would look outstanding imo.

If you really want to plant vegetables you could give it a try. Just plant a small quantity of a lot of different things and see what works. Might be a little late this year, but you could at least try some quick growing/fall crops. You might be surprised at what works.

After you figure out a rough idea of what you would like to plant visit a local nursery and double check your plant selections with them. They are familiar with your local climate and what will be cold tolerant for you and what will likely do well for many years to come.

Might try to find some broccoli to try this fall. I’m going to try others next season to see how it works out. Might extend the other wall to the front of the house and use that as our main garden.
Been there twice this week for plants in the boulder cracks. Will stop back again.

so we have an oak tree next to my house and the bark has been peeling. It has gotten much worse over the last couple months. Any tree doctors here? Saveable or should I just eat the cost and chop it down?

Not a tree doctor, but if it's close enough to fall on my house, much as I'd hate to do it, it'd be gone. But would like to hear what others have to say.

Found this: Once Hypoxylon canker is evident, it is usually too late to try to save the tree. Large portions of the tree will be dead, reducing its desirability as a landscape specimen (Fig. 5). The structural integrity of the wood is also compromised, and the tree becomes a hazard. [IMG]

What is the consistency of that exposed sapwood? Do you see a fungus? With that much bark peeling, I think she may be done for. Also, are you 100% sure that’s an oak? You may have some different looking oaks over that way.

A good resource for local knowledge may be your county extension agent.

Not a tree doctor either, but I do know a little bit about them. Like hogfan said that doesn't look like an oak tree. A picture of a leaf, general location in the country, a wider picture of the tree, and are there other trees in the area showing similar symptoms would be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

maybe not an oak. Adding more pics below. Listing had called it an oak in the description of the property. It’s a pretty big tree, I’d hate to lose it with the amount of shade it gives on that side of the house.

I agree, that does look like a massive pear tree. And tntacoma is correct, those things split easily. If you’ve seen white flowers in the early spring time...definitely a pear. I personally get rid of it just as a precaution. Not a fan of pears next to my house.

Someone on our neighborhood page said maybe lightning? Seems silly to me, but we did hear a large bang on that side of the house back in spring that woke us from a dead sleep.

I agree it looks like a pear tree to me. Does it turn red in the fall, have mealy fruits, and white flowers in the spring? Bradford pear trees are awesome, beautiful, terrible trees. I know I had 6 of them at my previous house. They grow fast, weak, and brittle, but they are a good 25 - 30 year tree before they'll need to be replaced.

In my yard they were the last tree to lose their leaves. And, every year an early snow would break a bunch of branches. As for your tree it looks like some sort of fungal infection which is bad news for trees. You might be able to get a couple of more years out of it, but the clock is ticking. Depending on where it is in relation to other structures the splitting branches might not be too much of a problem. My Bradfords were about 40' tall and 20' from the house. The winter branch breakage never even came close to the house and IMO was more of an aesthetic issue than a safety issue.

Lighting will leave a path the whole way down the tree. You can usually trace it with your eyes.

PURSLANE.jpg This is not my garden but a potted plant I have at my work location apartment. Back home this pot sat by a purslane plant. We grow purslane for the wild rabbits - sometimes they really go to town on purslane. Anyway this little purslane is a volunteer from the home bunny feeder plant of last year. It has one little flower but the color is great - if only bunny was here he could have a snack!
