The asparagus I have seen growing locally looks pretty pathetic. I think it's just too hot here unfortunately. Cool season crops here are just hard to grow.

It's all a trade off. I can get an early start but the season is short because by mid July it's too hot. Lows in the 90's isn't uncommon. Fruit just won't set on at those temps. Tomato's are pretty much done end of July.

Humans are like cockroaches and will thrive almost anywhere there is water. And we have lots of that. Warm season crops like hot peppers and okra thrive. Cotton, soybeans, and winter wheat (#4 state in the US). And the most important crop is probably hay.

Ranchers say grass is the factory and cattle is the product (#2 state for beef cows in US).

Edit: I can't believe I failed to mention our fastest growing cash crop. Lol. :rasta:

Ours are only 2 years old. Hit them with Muracid, use pine bark nuggets fpr mulch. They like acid and water.

It must not get too hot where you are at. Mid 70s? Plastic would burn the plants down here. I mulch my beds.

I just harvested and processed lots of our collards. 6 fat large freezer bags full. So fresh and good the stems even raw are tender and sweet. Just cut, blanch, cool quickly drain and pack. Into the deep freezer.

Sometimes it gets really hot . Never been a problem with the plastic . We get some heat waves occasionally in the 90s . East central NY

Does the plastic helps with keeping moisture in?

Years ago when we seeded the yard the landscaper told us to use plastic for locking in the moisture, and keeping birds away.

Do you see an improvement in growing time over no plastic?

I wonder if plastic will work with hydroseeding. Are hot, dry months is coming. Unless I wait for Fall.
