My sister was taught by her in-laws. She used to write the made date on the lid.

Can the smell test be deceiving?

Is there a different between store bought sealed products vs homemade sealed products? Going by what you wrote, your shelf life is 2 to 3 more than store bought.

I finish store bought salsa with Dorritos in 5 minutes. Then an hour later all hell broke loose in the porcelain bowl.

    I'm addicted to salsa.

My neighbor used to have a well in the farm. I used to hand crank the buckets of water if the hand pump is broken to pressurized the system. If everything is broken then I would have to run a hose across the street from the house. It's was a old farm with fruit trees around 100 years old.

My neighbor made me do the tasting. By my face expression she know if the fruits were ready to be picked. I got sick from the sour taste. She did it on purpose to make fun me.

Replying to this post takes me back to my childhood.

Did you still eat the freezer burn meat? Did it plenty of time.

My father knew a butcher that gave us a deal on 1/2 cow. We could fill almost 2 freezer with meat.

My sister mentioned it was easier when the in-law was helping. Then the in-law got sick. Then my mother used to eat faster than my sister can make jam.

My wife is from SE KY. Just wondered if you were close to give you some paw-paws. We are loaded this year, and I am the only one who eats them. They can be turned into wine, I think. I need to look into that.

Supposed to be, ive just started learning about them. I havent fount any wild one but ive heard couple people say they've seen them or had them on their property. We are basically starting over here. I planted 5 apple trees, 2 cherry, 6 muscadine, 2 pawpaws.

We write dates also. And rotate jars to eat the oldest first. If lid is popped up, means contents are bad. Insides go into the trash, jar into the dishwasher on "sterilize".
If seal is OK, but product is more than 3 years old, I will smell it. If smells OK, will taste it. If I am not sure , in the trash it goes.

"Use by" date on the commercially canned food does not mean it is bad after. Taste and texture might be off, but product is safe to eat. Store bought canned goods actually last longer than home made (pressure canned+metal can block the sunlight)

Nothing gets wasted here. Worst freezer burned meat can be turned into a pot roast in the slow cooker.

    Good for you!!!
Stock up on Fungicide, while it is available. Fruit trees will need it.

We used to have 6 or 8 big pawpaw trees in my grandfathers hayfields, along with 4 or 5 chinquapin bushes, and wild raspberries all around the edge of the fields. One cousin built a house in one corner and cut down the pawpaw's, sister and bro-in-law built in another corner and wiped out the chinquapin's, another cousin built in the back of the field and then one of those dumb shit's went all around the field and sprayed brush killer to get rid of the "briars". I've been pissed about it ever since, always saw it as farmland, not for houses. And they can't keep up the road going up there, it's always washed out. Rant over, sorry.

Can the food in the jar make the lid pop?

Can temperature make the lid pop? My sister had a lid pop for no known reason.

How long does one have after the canned food has expired? Someone told me 10 years after date stamp.

I read it's good to eat canned food by expiration date, because the chemicals to seal the can from rusting can leech into the food.

Same here, nothing goes to waste. I had raw meat turned brown from freezer burn, and being old.
