If you have leaves, chop them up with the lawn mower, and cover the garden bed with them. The leaves will encourage worms to move in as the leaves decompose and help the soil out

Letting it lie fallow until spring is fine. You can add compost or other natural fertilizers, etc. or you can amend the soil in the spring. Certainly turning the soil in the spring can be done by hand, obviously that has been done before once or twice rofl or you could always pay someone to come and rototill it for you. You could consider removing any tall plants that have seed heads on them to lower the likelihood of having those seeds in the soil next year.

 

not a very large garden, will prob do by hand. 16x8 or so.

 

Got our sweet potatoes harvested. This is the biggest at ~3lbs

 

Dammmmm deer ate all of our winter broccoli every bit of a large crop wow

 

I was numb for awhile. I just stood there. They have never bugged any of those crops. Then walk out and it's just gone with a stick left on each one plant. Those deer must be farting like crazy. They were HUNGRY.

Did not touch the carrots or parsnips.

 

I know they will eat turnips

 

In GA animals eating your crops can be taken out of season by the landowner.
Sounds like you may have deer stake for Christmas.

 

A groundhog got all of my onions and started on the carrots. Made his way thru the fence and the gate gap and made home under an old shed.
I did not want to kill the old bastard (he has been on the property for at least 10 years), so a loud pop from an unloaded air rifle sent him jiggling back thru the gate gap.

Two days later I saw him and his mate (did not know I had 2 groundhogs, they apparently used to feed one at at time) take turns and try to infiltrate the garden again. One would stand watch, while his buddy crawled partway to the gate. Crawler then would stop, pop up and keep watch, while the 1st watcher crawled. I put a a BB pellet in the tree next to the watcher, and hilarity ensured. He ducked back in the bushes, while his crawling buddy got up and jiggled at the neck breaking speed 20ft past the watcher into the other set of bushes. At which point the Watcher ran out f the bushes and teared after his buddy, with clumps of grass flying up in the air.

Have not seen either one since. I hope a coyote, who has been hanging around, has not gotten them.

 

Garden is still going strong. Started drying the 4 remaining corn ears for next year’s planting. Tomatoes are doing much better without all the summer pests.









Started 2 dozen sweet potato slips after the harvest.

Can you grow anything in the greenhouse yet?

 

Need to figure out heat, may try propane heater.

 

What about solar panels? The only downside is when the sun goes down. Unless solar during the day, propane at night.

Not a good idea to leave a wood stove unattended.

 

Adding thermal mass helps depending on how cold it gets in the winter.
