They eat sap from holes made by Sapsucker woodpeckers , I've watched them follow the woodpeckers from tree to tree

I'm right on the coast like literally 100' from the Pacific Ocean at high tide so we don't get the winter where it freezes and stays like that for months but we get cold spells and then it warms up a bit usually . Lowest temp are generally -10C (14F)

Still amazing those birds survive there...I thought they all migrated in the winter.

Yeah its pretty cool . The Anna's are the only ones that over winter here , they also go into torpor at night when its cold which is basically a temporary hibernation that slows their metabolic rate till the morning

Now that they're blooming you'll want to start hilling them, then. Otherwise you'll have pretty low yields

Ill make sure to try that.

This is my third year doing them and I've had great yields so far.

Hilling can really increase your yields, and it can let you harvest a potato or two here and there during the season without disturbing the plants. It lets more potatoes form higher up the stems

Yukon golds you dont need to mound. The others grow tubers as you mound them up.

I just found this out recently myself...I thought they all needed mounding as the plant grows it starts to sprout roots. But I found out that is not the case with Yukon golds.

    Being a wildlife biologist, I'm
Impressed with your knowledge. Most hummers go into torpor nightly or they wouldn't survive.
