Happy Holidays TW family. I received an overlander for Christmas and after reading online reviews I’m not sure I want to keep it. I was excited about the satellite messaging until I found out it takes an additional in reach. I’m leaning towards returning it and just buying a new iPad mini and In reach and just using Gaia. What are all of your thoughts?

Damn, and I got a set of beer glasses for christmas...

Well, it's got "overlander" in the name, so you know it's legit and worth every penny, lol.

For the price, it doesn't seem to really offer anything that a tablet with integrated GPS doesn't offer, especially for off-grid navigation. You don't need voice navigation to give you direction to the nearest Starbucks when you're off-grid...

I'd return it, get a Galaxy Note or similar with integrated GPS and use your favorite off grid mapping app (Gaia, BC Nav, etc...).

Use the leftover money to get an in-reach mini with bluetooth if you really want the sat comms.

my thoughts exactly. I think I’m just going to get an iPad mini so my kid’s can break the screen on that too. And then an in reach mini for sat messaging. Thanks for the reply.

I'm in the same boat with the first commenter. Gaia on a device plus an InReach mini.

If necessary you can also use your phone for Gaia if you find the screen is large enough and you have enough storage. I'm not entirely sure how large maps can get, but I'd imagine a large swathe of land will fill your phone up fairly quickly. Alternatively get a "tough" tablet if they exist, something water resistant, bump/shock proof etc or just get a cheap Galaxy tab if you're worried about the life span of an iPad and put a Lifeproof or Otterbox Defender case on it.
