The road leaving my work is a fairly steep uphill, with a stop sign at a T intersection, cross traffic doesn't stop

My Mazda CX5 that I traded for my Tacoma had hill assist... you could take your foot off of the brake & it would sit there, absolutely locked in place until I hit the gas to turn.

The Tacoma also has hill assist... the design seems to be to make a huge racket while the truck rolls back crashing into the car behind you, at which time it briefly puts on the brakes. It works just as designed.

Soooo, I tried the same method I learned back in high school in my '58 Chevy Biscayne... hold the truck with the foot brake while loading the driveline with the throttle... slowly release the brake while gradually increasing the throttle. I get a dash warning that I have pressed the gas & brake at the same time, the ECU cuts off the gas & I get partway out into the intersection with no throttle control. WTF?

This really is a safety hazard... there must be some way to turn it off? Yes? Please?

    It’s a great system…. Not.

    Use your handbrake.

You’ll have to teach your feet how to release the brake quickly while giving it throttle. Can be done, but it’s different than the old vehicles. hill assist should give enough hold while doing this.

and this next step is a separate issue, but will help with acceleration from a stop in your situation.
Press and hold the traction control button up by your headliner for 5 seconds, before you leave work. (This needs to be done while stopped) You’ll see “TRAC OFF” light up on your cluster. This will turn off the traction control and allow you to give full throttle even when a tire starts slipping. This is very helpful when accelerating quickly from a stop. Just tap the bottom again when you get going up to speed to turn the traction control back on.

It’s a safety feature that causes a hazard. Toyota was forced to implement the system after numerous false claims that the throttle stuck and the brake pedal wouldn’t stop the vehicle.

makes it really hard to do a brake stand in an auto lol.

Tacomas have great handbrakes so it’s the only answer.

That's the problem... Toyota's hill assist is a joke. It takes way too long to sense that the truck is rolling backwards... like 2 feet. Youtube vids I've watched seem to show it's working as designed... It's just a shit design.

That sounds atrocious. No reason a vehicle shouldn't function in the matter you are trying to operate it.

True. It ain’t working like you want it to. The advice was more geared towards figuring out how to make the brake to gas transition quicker. Or use the hand brake like others have mentioned.

    I'm, uh, confused.

I've held full trailers on steep hills without having to use power stance, handbrake, brake assist, or rolling backwards. Light turns green, slide the right foot from brake to giddy-up. The truck goes forward as intended. Been doing it that way since before the days of computerized transmissions and assists. How are y'all having issues with this?

Sorry you have trouble driving. I do this every day. Quick off the brake onto the gas. maybe an inch roll back. No noise. No drama. No posts about it.

You must be doing it wrong. The brake override function doesn't kick in if you're on the brake first then apply the gas. It also doesn't kick in unless the throttle is opened quite a bit (> 33%). It also doesn't kick in below 5 mph... http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/at...er-ride-system-toyota_brakeoverridesystem.pdf

What MY did they start implementing that? My 2nd gen doesn’t have it, but it’s an ‘07 that doesn’t even have any traction nannies.

The 2nd gens had a limited update to ecu that introduced it with the pedal cut. It’s expired now but I want to say 2007

Sounds like this issue could be solved by putting your foot on the brake. :muscleflexing:

This. Exactly! No requirement for any additional "features", just more practice required. Find a hill on a backroad, and spend a couple of hours next Sunday afternoon. After a little practice you should have no issue doing this on any hill, and should roll back no more than 1-2".

Shouldn't even take that much practice. It took me less than an hour to learn how to hill start in an MT without smoking the clutch.

On an AT, it's pivoting the toe of your shoe four inches and pressing down in a timely manner. It might take one or two tries before you're taking off without lurching, but this is a bit of a fundamental.

I thought, hill assist was for the MT only and then it was only on the sport and not an OR not the Pro I have a manual, absolutely no hill assist, rolled back in neutral once, only thing that stopped me was the tiny civic (license plate said R2-D2) that was lost behind my tailgate. Once I thought I was gonna have problems backing out uphill, but meh. Op if you have a manual transmission you should look into the ADM delete.

Automatics do have a hill assist by default. Automatics equipped with the fancy ceiling knob either have a very weak version or no hill assist, I forget which. It has to do with the electronic brake booster in those trims.

I have hill assist in my OR, it works fine, if you deliberately let it roll back, it will have a fit, but you have to be pretty deliberate.
