I have a Scepter MFC that I carried diesel in back in the day. I want to use it now for gasoline in my Tacoma on an extended off-road trip and have read differing opinions about cleaning it out. Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks!

Open it up, drain it and air it out til dry. Done. If you want you can replace the gasket on the lid for a gas specific material, I did on mine but I don’t recall having any leaks before doing it.

I would dry it out, but first use a good degreaser to break down any remaining oil in there.

Unless something really weird is going on, any residue that would exist would be so diluted by the time it hit your fuel system it wouldn't matter.

If you want to feel better, fill it with gas and slosh it around really well, pour in your truck when it's down to 1/2 or more to increase the dilution rate.

Most definitely change the lid gasket to the appropriate type of fuel to get the best use out of these tanks. They will last some time and the lids usually the point where you’re going to get issues.

Rinsed it out with a bit of gas, changed the gasket as suggested. After the trip I drained it into my tank with zero issues. Thanks all!

Make sure the cap strap is the right color - red for gas, yellow for diesel

Fuel carriers actually have a ratio of mixed fuels that's allowed, so even if you have a tad bit of diesel or regular, it doesn't matter or affect anything. You get about a 10% (if I remember correctly) of mix in any tanker as they don't usually clean them out.
