Gas gauge misleading?

On my truck:

At 21 and 20 gallons in the tank, the needle is above the full line.
At 19 gallons, the needle is on the full line.
At 18 gallons, the needle is 1/4 down in the space to the 3/4 line.
At 17 gallons, the needle is 2/3 down towards the 3/4 line.
At 16 gallons, the needle is on the 3/4 line.

In terms of miles... at my 17 mpg:

0-17 (and under ~30 miles), above full line.
34 miles, on full line.
51 miles, 1/4 down the space to the 3/4 line.
68 miles, 2/3 down towards the 3/4 line.
85 miles, on the 3/4 line.

I'm fairly close to these numbers also. The farthest I've pushed the tank was just over 19.1gal, 344mi @ 18mpg.

It is nice when we get 17 or more MPG, isn't it!?

Here are my entire gauge scale findings:

FULL: 21 Gallons
F LINE: 19 Gallons (down 2)
3/4 Line: 16 Gallons (down 5)
1/2 Line: 12 Gallons (down 9)
1/4 Line: 8 Gallons (down 13)
LIGHT ON: 4 Gallons (down 17)
E LINE: 3 Gallons (down 18)

The above figures have been consistant, within 1/2 gallon +/-.
