Gas gauge showing the wrong level

Just FYI, and it will be interesting if any other trucks had the same issue.

    Events:
After driving a couple of hundred miles it was time to add more gas. I pulled up next to the gas pump and parked the truck (what actually happen was that I put the truck in reverse but since I had my foot on the brake it did not move back) and I turned off the engine. I toped the gas and turned the truck engine on (this is when I noticed that I had it in reverse). I shifted to Drive and got on the freeway. Noticed that the gas gauge showed only 86 miles to go and was low mark. I wondered what happened... did I get scammed at the pump cause I saw the pump taking my money. I stopped at the next gas station and tried to add more gas but no... the gas tank was full. I checked my bank account and yes, the charge for the gas was there. I turned my truck back on and it still showed low gas. I parked for a couple of minutes and turned it back on and no luck, still low. I said fudge it, since I had a long drive ahead of me, and sure enough as I added more miles the gas gauge was moving lower but extremely slow. I figured that it was showing the wrong gas level but trying to compute the estimated gas milage. 200 miles later I was still showing about 25 miles left on the gauge. So it was time to refill and buy something to eat at the gas station. When I restarted the truck, it was showing the right level of gas (full) and estimated miles (289). Not sure if other 2024 models had similar issues but at least you know.

It’s a problem they still haven’t fixed on the Tundra too.

When I bought my SR5, on the way home, the gas guage didn't move at all. I found that if you press and hold the OK button and while holding, turn on the ignition. After about 5 seconds or so, the fuel gauge will recalibrate. That fixed it for me. I've had to do it a couple other times as well, when the fuel gauge doesn't seem to be moving.
    Hope this helps.

This happened to me today as well, fuel gauge did not change during filling and I thought something was broken. I drove off knowing that the fuel I just bought was in the tank, and in about two blocks the fuel gauge/estimated miles left corrected itself. I wonder how many people are experiencing this and how often does it happen. This is my first time and I have about 10k on my odometer.

We are anticipating an update/recall for this in the near future. All the modern trucks are having issues with this. You are not alone and I can assure you they are working on something.

They've addressed this in the past on other models.

There's actually a couple sections on this in the manual. It details the holding the OK button while starting the engine and keeping it held for 5s until the odometer blinks to recalibrate it. It also mentions how putting in only a small amount of fuel (whatever "small" is) may not update it and how refueling with the engine running may not update it.

If they went to the trouble to publish it in the manual, then they definitely have known about it for a while. Seems an odd bug to choose to go to production with.

I found this on p.96 right after the section about recalibrating the fuel level readout:

I can't help but wonder if everybody's using the same library for their gauge cluster software and there's a fundamental problem with it.

Thanks for pointing that out in the manual, I did keep the engine running during refueling. On the other hand I put over 14 gallons in when this happened, so not exactly a small amount. Going forward I will refuel with the engine off and see if it ever happens again.

Modern vehicle or older vehicle, will not show accurate fuel level if you leave it running, must cycle the key to get correct level reading...

Out of the 70 times I have added fuel to my truck this has happened twice. The second time I noticed this, I was not as worried as the first. Yet, I hope they fix this on this expensive truck.

Every car I've ever had besides this Tacoma has updated the fuel gauge and estimated range normally if I fill it with the ignition on. I've watched the gauge climb and the numbers increase.

Honestly, I don't understand why this ever even came up. Fuel level readings are a problem that was solved more than a century ago and range calculations aren't exactly higher mathematics.
