Hello all! Just got myself a new '15 Tacoma TRD Sports and I'm a little surprised on how much gas it uses. On a full tank, I only get about 250 miles (give and take). Is it because it's winter and super cold here and I usually warm up my truck until it's warm before driving? I think it's a 16 gallon tank? That's like 15 MPG, that's horrible to me. It's using more than a Tundra with a 5.7L engine with more than 300 HP. Unless my idling consumes a major part of the gas, I think this truck is a lemon.

    What's your thought(s)?

    Just some interesting facts below......

    Your tank is 21.1 gallons.

The 5.7 tundra has 383 HP.

And you are literally idling away most your fuel to get the car warm. Ive done it before. It will be around zero outside for a week and if i warm it up to steady state temperatures each time (6 days in a row) it eats a quarter tank of fuel just doing that. that and a combination of winter fuel is what is causing the problems.

Also your truck is really only going to get between 15-18 mpg in the winter.

There is nothing wrong with the truck from the sounds of it.

Okay, thanks for the reply. A little happier now, at least. Just had to vent out at the low MPG I'm getting (compared to the dealer sticker on the window). I hope it's just the winter (warming up the truck, winter gas, the cold temperature, etc).

I've just realized there is a long thread about this already. Too eager to post without reading/searching.

Sounds normal to me. Mileage on these trucks varies greatly with the conditions. Around town about 15.5 for me with no warm up time. 100% highway I have seen 20....a couple times. I am disappointed if I compare it to a full size in terms of mileage vs power. Really like these trucks and have had a thing for them for 25+ years. While there are many appeals to the Tacoma fuel mileage is not one of them.

Sounds about right for the Tacoma. Our trucks are not know for excellent gas mileage, my son has a 2017 Tundra that gets 15.5 mpg which is slightly less than what I get

Have you done the math and actually figured your fuel mileage. Depending on how I drive mine, and how close to empty I push it I'll get 250-375 miles on a tank. But that number means nothing. With my normal every day driving I average about 17 mpg. On the open road 19-20 mpg is the norm and under ideal conditions I've gotten as much as 22 mpg on a few tanks.

A Tundra will get 13-14 mpg in everyday driving and at best 18 mpg on the road. The fuel mileage difference isn't huge, but enough to matter. I bought my Tacoma to have a smaller vehicle to maneuver around tight spots, not for fuel mileage, that is why the Honda is in the driveway.

The size of the fuel tank can be misleading too. The Tundra has a much larger tank and which may help to create the illusion of better fuel mileage. My F-150 has a 36 gal tank and gets almost exactly the same fuel mileage as the Tacoma. But being able to go 600 miles between fill-ups makes it seem much better than it is.

Hmmm...Now I'm starting to feel a little remorse about getting the Tacoma when I should've gone for a Tundra. I like the comfy ride and everything auto on the Tundra. Not even a Power Seat for my Tacoma Sports.

I will just ride it out and find out the MPG in the summer. It's very cold here in MN.

My new 2017 has about 550 miles on it and I tracked the last tank and only got 11MPG. Granted it is cold and 4x4 has been engaged the the whole tank given all the snow we have had. Hope gets better. Will continue to track it.

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
if you were looking for fuel economy should have gotten the 2.7l 4 cylinder bout 22mpg on winter fuel and 23-24 mpg on regular gas

That's right around what I get with my 4.0 in the winter. It spends about 80% of the winter in 4x4 due to ice and snow. The extreme cold doesn't help either.

Empty tank (gas light on). Fill it up. Reset Trip A to Zero. Drive until gas light comes on again. Divide Trip A mile by how many gallons it took to fill up the tank. I thought it was 16 gallons, but another poster said it's 21.5, so it's even worse than the 15 MPG I thought I got... 11.63 MPG! OMG! I'm freaking out now!

You should only be dividing by the number of gallons you put in, not the volume of the tank. If you have bigger than stock tires, you need to account for their actual size. This will give you an approximation of mpgs. Even if you fill up at the same pump every time, you're calculations won't be exact.

Wear a jacket in cold weather. My Tacoma, with temps in the high 20's will be up to normal temperature within 2 miles driving city streets.
