So I checked the specs on my wife's 2016 4Runner and it says it has a 23 gal fuel tank. The problem is that the computer "cruising range" says she has 0 miles to go until empty and we pull over and fill up and voila, only 19.4 gal of gas were used. Is this normal? Reset the computer? What do you guys think? I told her not to worry, she's got 3 more gallons of gas but she doesn't believe me!

some of this, a little of that
its a Toyota thing, they are trying to save us from ourselves and not run out of gas. On the Tacoma when the light comes on there is still a few gallons in there.

My Tacoma does the same. I'll try and reassure her to remain calm when she gets below 25 miles to go. (I guess it didn't help that the salesman said "don't let it get below 25 miles left")

Yeah that's normal, basically there's a built in reserve to get you to the next station!

Sorry man. I rarely drive the 4Runner. I didn't even know it has the distance to empty thing...

There's always a reserve in place to get you to the next station. Unlike the old vehicles of before when the gauge hit the bottom and you were done. I think it's designed to let you know you need gas ASAP but get you about 50 miles.

Thanks fellas. I'll keep trying to convince the wife to drive it until it runs out of gas and then fill it up with Jerry can to see how far it'll go. She doesn't like that idea so much

I wouldn't necessarily recommend that. Fuel helps keep the fuel pump cool which helps prolong the life of the fuel pump. I rarely let mine get below 1/4 tank.

My work vehicle (scion xb) does the same thing, I've driven over 50 miles on 0 miles left. If you want to figure out how far the range is just carry a gas can and trip your miles after reaching 0.

The fuel going thru the pump helps keep it cool, it does not to be immersed in fuel to keep it cool.

I've run my 'yota's on empty for 14 years, never ever had a fuel pump issue.
