To be honest, I don't know if mine works anymore or not. Can't even remember the last time it came on. Haven't let it get that low in years.

Not sure how they can 'reset' the gas light, sounds like they were making something up to send you on your way.

Maybe the bulb is burnt out? If not then it's probably the sensor or the sending unit that you'd have to access inside the tank I think.

    Does your fuel gauge work?

I have never trusted those low-fuel lights anyway. I think mine has shown itself about twice in the last 25,000 miles.

I remember when I was little, my dad used to drive this old pick-up truck, and the gas gauge didn't work, so when he got towards the end of the week, he would take the gas cap off and poke this stick down there and see how much gas was left in the tank!

They're supposed to come when you have ~2.5 gallons left, which is usually (for me) right when the needle drops below the 'E''...ideally you don't want to see the light anyway because being that low on fuel is bad for your fuel pump

Somehow people drove successfully for decades without them.

Dealer reset your maint required light as part of the oil change. There is no low fuel light reset.

Its not part of the diagnostic scan they can run for the dash lights? Yeah gas gauge works fine.

Nope the diagnostic scan is to read check engine light codes

I never really understood gas lights anyway. If you have a working gauge E means empty when the needle hits E rest assured your low. Bad for the pump to wait on a light anyways.

I don't know if all trucks have them. I have owned my 96 for almost 7 years and never seen the light.

I don't think any 1st gens had a maint required light. Just the standard check engine light.

Could be a lot of things as other people mentioned. If you have the SR5 package you should have the light. However as people have mentioned all you really need to do is look at the fuel gauge. For me it wouldn't be something I would put to much worrying into.

Most 3.4 auto SR5 had the light. 2.7's autos did not.

I did this with a '68 VW. I forgot a couple of times and was stranded in the middle of nowhere.

What makes you say that? I've got a 2.7 auto and I have the light.

I always thought it was related to 95-00 vs 01-04. I pulled the sender out of my fuel tank to repair the connector and noticed that my fuel sender did not have the 3rd wire for the light (I was fixing a burnt connector). However, the wiring was there in the harness to the tank. I also noticed that the gauge cluster is wired for it as well (just need to add a bulb). So I believe any truck can have the low fuel light as long as it has the correct fuel sender.

But how do you know when to change the oil? :annoyed: :D

Ok, my bad. I keep thinking my 1st gen Highlander is like a 1st gen Tacoma. I guess it is just more plush than I realized. ;)

Never. 1st gen don't have the "Maintenance Required." light because it does not need any maintenance

When I drive my wife's 2015 Corolla S, I always think that I want a new Tacoma or 4Runner with all of the technology. Then I come to my senses and realize that I wasn't thinking straight. Why would I give up my 1st Gen?
