There is no reason why you would mess it up. You are actually saving the tranny some work because you are just coasting.

Coasting in gear causes the fuel injectors to shut down until around 1000 rpms. At higher speeds it takes a few seconds, lower speeds, it's almost instant. Basically you recapture a little bit of the energy you've expended accelerating. Coasting in neutral means you are still burning/wasting fuel.

That may be true, but when I am coasting in nuetral the engine isn't braking

I am amazed at how that 2.7 will hold 5th gear on moderate grades while set on cruise.

    Exactly, it's idling

And if you're not slowing down, why would you be in neutral? (when you could be using zero fuel, while saving a little brake pad...)
Basically if you are maintaining your speed you are on the throttle, if you are slowing, you have the opportunity to recapture some energy, by burning no fuel while you slow down. Coasting in neutral is just idling, which we all know is not an ideal situation...
Not to mention the other benefits of less clutch and synchro wear, less brake wear.....

Update, made the trip and back a couple times since then, 435 miles on a little over 17 gallons - low fuel light did not even come on... i calculated 25.4MPG by going 65mph and no ac use until i could not take it any more:). did the trip 4 times and the numbers were all about the same between 425 - 440 miles and 17 - 17.5 gallons...

reducing speed, keeping it steady and reduced A/C use will help your mileage, but the trip did take almost 7 hours as opposed to just under 6 previously.

What has been said about every 5 mph > 60 reduces your mpg 1 - 1.5mpg has some truth to it, at least in my case...

These numbers jive better with what my scangauge says....However are you correcting for the fact that 65 on the speedo is closer to an actual 61MPH......And the odometer is off by 3.5%?
This would mean 410 to 425 miles at 61 mph or 24 mpg..... Which is almost exactly what my gauge tells me....

I think the odometer is very close to actual but the speedo is off... at least that seems to be more of the consensus around here

I have about 10K miles on my rig and have noticed that as I accelerate and reach about 2200 rpm, the engine starts making good power.

Powerband threshold......the place where the powerband begins would seem to be the optimum fuel mileage cruising speed.
If you're in the powerband (in this case at the bottom of it) the computer can respond smoothly to power requests (hills).
This is more important with a manual vs. an auto, since the computer can downshift the auto.

    On a recent trip I set cruise @ 65mph.
RPM's were approx 2200 with my 4.10 axle ratio
    Fuel mileage was 26.7mpg

On most models yes, I can only speak to the CDN 4X4 AC, I have GPS'd it and found it is off by nearly 3.5%. On a 10000km avereage....

When I noticed my speedometer might be a little off, I started comparing my odometer to interstate mile markers on longer trips.

In every case my odometer has been off, and has so far recorded an average of a little more than + 4.5% with stock diameter tires.

This is like adding almost 1 mile for every 20 miles actually driven, and has since proven to be consistent with my speedometer discrepency.

i wonder why this is? i drove by a speeding radar and my speedo said 51 but the display said 48-49.

That's probably intentionally within the factory calibration specification.

Going up one tire size to 265/75/16 would likely put you right on the money, but then drop your mileage & power just a bit.

    Ohhhh well.....;)

Makes people think their mileage is better, easily corrected by Toyota, but I think it's intentional. Most people don't check, and a large % don't really care. Wait until one has a warranty claim 2000 miles after warranty runs out....

    PS- Best sig Ever.
