    I couldn't imagine towing a 4K lb. trailer up the Grapevine with my Tacoma(with tow package) in my wildest dreams. Let alone shaving 10K mi. off the brakes on the way down.

    Or you're hauling too fast to compensate with proper downshifting. You shouldn't be riding either set of brakes on any grade.
