Not a bad idea to check, but I don't think so, I recently got it off and painted it, no damage was observed, and it was making the same MPG before that work.

Is it yours a 3.4 as well?

Yes 3.4. Around town is 15-18. The best mpg was on the highway for work commute a couple years ago.

8.7 sounds way bad. These trucks should average around 16 - 18 in most cases. Sounds like you should start with a tune up and go from there, assuming it's overdue for one

D rated tires are heavy and will affect mpgs but not that severely.

Two possibilities here for such bad gas mileage:
    1. To quote my Chinese fortune cookie- Sum Ting Wong. Engine/controls related.
    2. You suck at math.

I do suck at math but not that hard!! :D last tune up was performed 4 months ago, new cables, spark plugs, filters, etc. Emissions from last inspection were also good (if that could even be an indicator), so any other ideas on how to diagnose are appreciated.

I know this is off-topic, but would D rates tires also affect ride comfort? I feel it a little too jumpy on the highway at anything above ~45mph.

Yeah, heavier load tires will ride rough on lightweight compact trucks like these.

Tough to diagnose from afar. How long have you had the truck? Did it ever get good gas mileage?
What type emissions test? Exhaust test or OBDII plug? Does it smell like it’s running rich? Engine run smoothly? Brakes in good shape and not dragging? Possible gas thief in the neighborhood? I’m just throwing stuff out here lol :D

Good job on the maintenance but have you cleaned your throttle body?

Best I’ve ever gotten out of a taco is my fathers 02 musters up 20-21mpg on the highway taking it easy.

My 01 was lucky to hit 17

Good thing my Avalon gets 30-32

I've seen above 18mpg only once in my 3.4.
I was pretty happy with an average around 16-17, but not so much with gas prices like they are now :help:

Got about 14 mpg on first two tanks of the 2.4l with stock wheels; but it did have a O2 sensor out.
Changed the sensor, and it looks like next tank will be much better. Bought it more for utility, reliability, and comfort than great mileage.

I had a 2015 Nissan Versa SV before the truck that got about 33mpg in town. But that car was too much of a liability out of warranty, with the trashy overheating CVT and engine knock issues. People on the Nissan forums were gloating about getting to 100k miles without a blown engine or transmission, lol. I think a new transmission cost 3-4k on those, and they tend to blow quicker after being rebuilt. Pretty much a throw away car...
