Agree, the very fact that someone is aware of their mileage and can self report biases the data because their awareness likely effects their driving style and increases the odds of them having proper tire pressure, Etc.

For myself, the display on the Tacoma has resulted in smoother driving that improves mpgs.

Okay, hard ass. Here’s my attempt at the scientific method from the data provided in this thread so far. This includes all the stockers and the modified armchair experts with rosy smelling shit.

23 total responses, as of this advanced study. Among the responses there were 43 mpg claims, given various conditions. I threw out two claims on the extreme ends of the spectrum, 57.6 and 8.5, so as to not screw the results.

    Drumroll please,

18.45 as the official Tacoma World average mpg, all things considered.

The mpg is highly dependent on the terrain. Not all highways are created equal. On a level road, there's enough torque at low rpm's to keep consumption within check. In the hills you need to bury the pedal to get the engine into the higher rpm's where there's more torque, and unfortunately, more fuel consumption.

In terms of math; driving 12,000 miles/year and getting 17 mpg will cost ~$47 more per month in fuel compared to 22 mpg.

Summertime I average around 22 mpg. Lately with the temps in the 20s I am averaging 17-18 mpg.
OP, if you have an Automatic, try driving with the ECT button off. It will up shift at lower RPMs, but that should give you better MPG.

My all time MPG is 18.5. Manual calculation. Computer shows 19.5. Sure, every now and again I'll get a trip at 24-25 mpg, or even a tank full at 24 or so, but that's with optimum driving conditions. Around town getting stopped by lights, waiting in drive through lanes etc drags this down a bunch.

    All of them.
35s. 5.29s and full steel armor, swing out, winch and campershell. Getting 17.5 mpg. That small town living. Never above 60mph. No highways near me.

I usually average 20-22mpg city and 24-26mpg hwy...but then again I have the 4 cylinder and I'm not an aggressive driver. I would agree that my cpu mpg is almost dead on compared to when I fill up and manually calculate.

@Anton338: I use Fuelly and I had no idea they shared aggregated data like this. So cool.

    upload_2021-12-30_16-4-6.jpg

There are 599 Tacomas with 3.5L V6 and double cab/crew cab contributing to the above figure. And as previously pointed out, they're likely all stock or close to.

Anecdotally, I'm at 15.9 MPG. I have 285/75R16 and a few hundred pounds of extras. My Fuelly calculations match the Tacoma's computer within 0.1 MPG usually. However, my speedometer isn't recalibrated, so based on tire circumference my actual MPG is +6.8% = ~16.9 MPG. This is still at the lower end of the histogram above. However, I live in the city, with lots of hills, stop lights, stop and go, idling, etc. There are some great mileage trips with modest speed highway driving, but those are a minority of my miles.

Regardless, despite the questionable validity of some contributions to the data above--like my own--its a nice normal distribution, which makes the average of the data more believable, reliable, and generalizable. For all of the people with uncalibrated speedometers, big tires, and overloaded trucks, there are probably an equal number who have great driving conditions and hypermile everywhere.

The take away I think is to forget the exceptions, invalid contributors, etc; the majority of contributors (54%) to the data above are 18-20 MPG, and 77% are 17-21 MPG --- this is what I would expect from a real world V6 3.5L DC Tacoma.

Data based on fact is not anecdotal. Anecdotal is false data. Made up. Regardless if anyone person in here, provides data that doesn't make it anecdotal. My data is a sampling of one set of data points, with variables of environment, driving style and vehicle configuration. Not anecdotal. Fuelly does not make my or anyone else's data in this thread anecdotal.

I average 17L/100KM, easier comparo for my metric brethren. That is 90% in town driving.

Its a average. Fill your tank up all the way. Zero out your trip ometer then Drive your normal drives. Get down a quarter to a half tank. Fill it up and divide your miles and gallons used. You’ll get a real average mpg. I have a 2012 4.0 liter Tacoma with a fiber glass cap. With eway driving at over 70 mph I’m getting 18 ish mpg. My 2020 hybrid Corolla get anywhere from 50 to 58 mpg average . One week back and forth to work then it’s great then less. Taking off from lights it goes way low, missing light I do great. Good luck, give up the lead foot ways, and glide a lot helps too.

MPG has been tracked for all fillups on Fuelly and weather was pulled from Weather Underground.
