I am not sure about the mileage of the Ranger, however with a Ford performance tuner it makes 75 more lb-ft of torque and 50 more horsepower. It is just not a very nice looking truck. As for my 3.5 liter Ecoboost in the F150, well it gets better fuel economy in every circumstance as compared to my Tacoma. Each truck has its own purpose and I like them both. As I stated the Toyota 5.7 liter is retired for smaller displacement and forced induction and the 3.5 liter in the Tacoma is soon to follow. No doubt the Tacoma 3.5 liter is a reliable work horse but it has run its coarse. This is not a jab at the Tacoma, I love the truck but it's power to mileage ratio is lagging other manufactures and they know it. The 3.5 liter like the 5.7 liter will be replaced with a turbo charged engine.

The comparison I am making is the torque and horsepower vs displacement. That is comparable and is exactly why Toyota is following the path of the Ecoboost. Yes the fuel mileage is similar with the Ecoboost getting better, but and this is the important thing. With similar mileage and same displacement engine, the turbo charged engine has 220 lb-ft torque and 120 more horsepower. Yes I know the two, one naturally aspirated and one turbo charged are not a direct comparison but the concept is. All manufactures are heading the direction of smaller displacement and forced induction. The fuel economy while not in a boosted condition returned better fuel economy. This is not a negative thing for the Tacoma 3.5 liter, it is a solid engine but technology will call for its replacement.

The wife and I took a quick 400 mi. round trip for NYE. Traveled east/west with mostly 20-45 mph cross wind from the south. Trraffic was mostly light. Lot of uphill/downhill grades, with the last 70 miles of the trip into a direct strong 40mph headwind.

Mileage was decent given the conditions. Averaged ~18 mpg for the trip. The Prinsu was a bit noisy with the crazy winds, but not terribly bad. In general, I felt like I was being whipped around pretty good in the winds, however the Yota held the road pretty good.

forgot to mention, I averaged ~72 mph est.

Same. Even if it's off in the math, some common sense will tell you the average is within rounding the decimals up/down. Right now with no tune and no gears, I'm at 15. Stock I was at maybe 17-19 depending on the roads. Hopefully after gears and a tune I'll be around 16-17.

Anyone who gets above 20 in these trucks either drives perfect roads in perfect conditions and probably like a snail, or they are full of shit.

Seems manufactures are all going turbo with smaller displacement engines. I wondering if its just to fill the gap for electrics next. I can tell you when it comes maintenance time on these eco boost trucks, your not in kansas anymore with the repair costs.

Your either driving over 75 mph all the time, or your just abusing the power band in these trucks running high rpm too much. I have a stock sr5 3.5 auto. Its always at 20 mpg or higher. Even when towing my light aluma 5x10 utility trailer i get 19. I drive some in town and secondary highways around 50-60 mph, some interstate also at 75 or under.

    Power is a calculated unit.

Torque (ft-lb) multiplied by revolutions (rpm) (engine speed in this case) divided by a unit conversion of 5252 will yield Horsepower. Its an age old calculation dating back to the age of water power, well before steam power.

    Example: 10 Hp = 1 (ft-lb)*52520 (rpm)/5252

Just bought a 2020 off road after a deer totalled my 2015. Do the newer truck computer's change tune or learn if running higher octane fuel ? Will you see a increase in HP or mpg with premium over 87 octane and if so is it enough to offset the higher cost ?

I'm lifted with heavy rims and tires and it's a Montana truck. Constant winding hills and constant wind. Even stock 20 was rare.

50-60 on flatter roads in certain areas will probably get you 20 average. Sounds about right.

But nope, I don't have a heavy foot. Just the way it is in different locations. I used to live in Virginia Beach and I could see an average of 20 there.

How you determine horsepower has nothing to do with me preferring a motor with more torque than horsepower, such as the eco diesel, which was my point and the subject of the conversation. Lol

I live at the foot of the berkshire's, and the east side of the taconic's here in nw connecticut. Its hilly with winding roads but not like montana. 23 mpg, and change for the dead of summer, and 20 for the winter, plus all our grade fuels are the E10 type.

I was running close to 500HP on my Roushed F150 and garnered better MPG on the Ford. Like you I like my Tacoma; just saying

does anybody think radar cruise control gets the best MPG? or is my foot metering a better option?

    Foot.

Foot can anticipate hills and, if no one is on your ass, ease off the throttle a bit when you’re close to the top.

The best I can get is 20 mpg when I cruise less than 60 mph when the road is slippery and I am on my way to the ski resort. Otherwise, no more than 17mpg combined.
