Hello everyone! New to the site and am enjoying my new 2022 Tacoma.
My Tacoma currently has a little less that 1000 miles on it and up until today my mileage display was showing 18.3 MPG. Today I received my K&N air filter and put it in and took off to the gas station to fill up. On the way there the MPG was still showing 18.3 MPG. After I got gas the mileage dropped to around 11 MPG but then as I drove around it climbed up to as much as 27 MPG. When I parked it, the truck was at 24.6 MPG. Anyone ever seen anything like this?

Don't go by that trip meter. It reads the mileage (and not that accurately) for the individual trip you are on. Also, the mileage per tank updates very quickly and is very affected by driving changes right after your fill-up. If you want a real sense of your actual MPG do the math the next time you fill up. Number of miles traveled / amount of fuel you fill. What you are seeing with those meters is normal, which is why they aren't reliable for actual MPG readings.

Manual measurements/metrics are the only true, and recommended, method. The truck isn't as smart as it makes itself out to be. For example, the "live" view of your current MPG's are calculated differently than your distance to empty calculation.

But also, your MPG's will obviously fluctuate based on quite a few factors.

I can assure you that you didn’t magically gain nearly 7 mpg. Try running test over several tanks. And that’s assuming you could keep the same routes and weather conditions.

Welcome to TW! I’d reiterate what the others have already said about the value of manual calculation vs. the digital calculation.

I've had my truck for just over a year now and my on screen Tank Average is always within a 1/10 th mile of my calculation at fill up.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

Mileage on the display will be all over depending on the particular trip. I do like watching it on a trip to see how high I can get it, economy drops like a rock at higher speeds, these have the aerodynamics of a barn.

"I do like watching it on a trip to see how high I can get it" I'm the same way. Seems like there is a lot of air flow restriction on these new vehicles.

While not always perfect, I can assure engineers didn't overlook intake capacity or leave secret HP left to be unlocked. Modern vehicles are tested and tuned to squeak every bit of economy and efficiency out of them.

Take that K&N and throw it in garbage. Unless you like cleaning mass air flow sensor all the time, and you believe in that hocus/pocus.

Soon enough you'll be lifted and on 33s or larger and all the mpg goes out the window anyhow. :)

Trucks have never been about "MPG". Plenty of mpg vehicles out there, but a truck is not it; never has been. Trucks were built to get a task done at all costs. Today's trucks are all powerful and come with all the creature comforts. The problem with that they have strayed from just being a truck and a lot of urban folks think they should be better at just hauling their ass around. Every now and then I have to remind myself that the way it is.

Break in will result in better m.p.g.'s which more often than not is quickly offset by add on truck stuff...

The intake isn’t going to affect the MPG or the power as much as you think. It is a very negligible amount to add some throatiness to the sound.
Other than driving habits, there is not much you can do to gain MPG. However, there are several ways to noticeably reduce your MPG with some kick ass mods.

Everyone has pretty much summed it up. It all depends on your driving style and setup. I for one get lower mpgs on the highway and if I'm late to get somewhere. lol. I average 15 mpg taking it easy and local roads. 12 if I'm late! I'm also SC'd, tuned, Overland setup, Bumpers, and larger tires.

I would highly recommend taking out the K&N filter and going back to OEM. Long term it can damage your MAF sensor. You’ll thank me in a few years.
