That is pretty much the reason why I wanted this thread...My Toyota Matrix had a fuel injector "O" ring start leaking which was not covered by my warranty and cost over $250 labor and $20 parts to fix, I wanted to know if these stations like shell, mobile1, and so on help prevent things like this. Same with fuel injector cleaner additives or getting them professionally cleaned, is it necessary at some point or ever?

I have never run an injector cleaner, or had the service performed on any of my trucks, and I have never had an injector go bad.

I will put a can of seafoam in an empty tank of gas every oil change or so (10,000 miles). Just because their not bad yet doesn't mean they're working at the full capacity. I have had injectors go bad in an s10 but I think it was more because it sat all winter without being ran.

I have run 87, 89 and 91 in my truck. With the 91 it definately does seem to run smoother with a tad more power. I have not noticed any increase in mileage however.

I may try the Shell next fill up. QT out here is much less expensive than the Shell, so we'll see.

I have been using shell the last couple of tanks. I use 87. My MPG average has been 23-24 in town. I just filled the tank, after a couple of miles, the SG is reading 22.8 MPG.

I started using 91 in my v6 taco and the last fill up was 22.5 mpg. it was nice to see that!

a little caution on 4 bangers and 91 or 93 octane gas... my fist truck, 91 s-10 4 cyl, I bought used from a guy with 110,000 miles on it and he had had it since new and only used 91 octane or better and recommended I do the same. I did and at 180k the valves had burned in it. I was told that running the high test had made the valves burn out. I'm sure motors have changed a lot since then but this may be something to watch out for with the 4 cyl engines

I'm not sure if Ethanol is added here in NC or not, I'll check it out. Not sure what to do if it is though, seems the person at the pump has no choice in the matter

I noticed a definite performance increase when I switched to 93 octane (from 87).

For the past 2 tanks, I am exclusively using Shell V-Power 93. So far, I have gotten about 2mpg better than when I was using 87. I am tracking my results for each tank on a spreadsheet. I plan to use 10 tanks of 93 and average my results. Then, I will switch back to 87 for long enough to determine if it's worth the extra $7-8 for the higher octane.

I figure I will pay more but get that back in mpg + enjoy the benefits of the higher octane.

I may try the higher octane but with prices increasing at the pump it will hurt!

^Try a tank and track it. If it works out for you and you save a buck or two with increased mileage, stick with it. If not, no big loss.

Pretty much the same. I can't say for certain because my tires are 265-70-16 instead of the 275-60-16 that it should have come with.

I fill up with Co-oP, but when it's not possible, I put Shell in there. I like how they have a separate hose and nozzle for Premium. Means I don't get a first 2 liters of regular and the next guy filling with regular gets my 2 liters of premium.

91 isn't an option at most places here in NC...simple solution I've used before on 91 octane vehicles is to alternate each fill up - one tank at 89, the next tank at 93, and assume it evens out.

Anyone know if this is a problem or not?

Switching between the 2 octains does nothing. In most cases, it takes 1 tank of running the particular fuel for the computer to fully adjust to the new octain, and give best performance.
