Has anyone experienced gas ping when burning 87 octane gas. I'm talking about the 6cy. non-supercharged taco's.

My truck with 26k on the clock seems happier with the 89 octane vs the 87.
The manual says 87 or high.

My engine knocks like crazy using 87 thru 91 when in most gears and under load. If I floor it, no knock, but if the acceleration is gradual, it's there. There's a TSB for this condition for my year - 2012 that flashes the ECU. I'm getting it done next week. May or may not help according to the threads I've seen here.

Run a can Techron through the gas, burn off the carbon and ping will go away.

The truck is a 2014. Runs good and was getting good gas mileage.
This summer I started to notice a gas ping when lightly pressing on the gas peddle and if I took it out of "D" and into 4 it would go away. I ran a few tanks of the 89 and there was no gas ping and my mileage drop a little.

I was curious if others experienced the same thing.

The TSB # 0044-14 SPARK NOISE- Shows up in some 2012 -2014 1GR - FE - 6cly. Mine did the same thing. Bring it to the dealer and they will reprogram the ECM.

    Whole lotta stuff
Mine pings with 87, 89, and 91 octane pump gas, but only in Drive at idle (engine under load from being in gear). I suspect a minor tuning issue on our trucks, so it would be probably be best to research the TSB.

However, something I have noticed that my 1GR has the most power on 89 octane. 87 and 91 feel the same in terms of acceleration (which makes sense when you think about the fuel window our engines operate on stroke), 91 being much smoother performance. So I've been running 89 for the past couple months.

I also run 89 and add 1 oz of 360 staybill to 5gal. Of gas. The truck runs smooth and idles great.

89 and you'll be fine. Just be glad you don't live in California $$$$. Also try changing your plugs. I'm sure you have 3 densos & 3 ngk's. Toyota does that from the factory.

Thanks for the TSB info and the number. I'll call my dealer and see if they will look at it.
The truck does seem to run nice on the 89 but I do miss the extra 30 miles (estimated) pre tank.

Update: The dealer did the TSB update and reset the ECM and there does seem to be an improvement but I'll know better when I try to use the 87 octane grade gas. Thanks for mentioning the TSB.
