Are YOU simple? Because congress passes legislation, not the executive branch. It's not like the Big O has a gas price button under his desk. Considering how much trouble the Obama white house is having passing things that are wildly popular with the people (health insurance reform has a high 60% to low 70% approval rating in polls), I'd love to see them try and pass a bill that regulates gas at no less than $7 a gallon.

You have a future as a comedian young man.

That people don't realize this boggles my mind. But then, see the other stuff I've had to explain in this thread. Something about common sense being startlingly uncommon...

Mr. Pickens was a smart man, and yes, this would *help* the problem, but not completely alleviate it. Part of America's problem with energy dependence is that we have a hell of a lot more ground to cover. In europe they get away with rail and public trans because you can walk to the grocery store, school, etc. Here in the US, everything is centralized and you have to drive in from the suburbs to get to Wal-Mart, the High School, your Doctor, etc.

Who said anything about it reducing greenhouse gasses?

I just don't want to be dependent upon insane theocracies for my energy needs. I couldn't give a damn about the Ozone layer. Burn it all down, man.

That Jonas guy in the Fox video is a fucking moron.

$7 a gallon gas would cause our economy to crash. Thats almost how much money I make in an hour... I'd have to double my hours at work just to afford to drive to work and school every week, not to mention the increase in cost of food and everything else that gets transported via truck...

I don't know. Who did? The quoted post suggested that a rail system would reduce our dependence on foreign oil. The article states that it won't.

No, the article states it won't reduce greenhouse emissions. It doesn't say anything about foreign oil.

Energy consumption does not have to equal oil consumption, reduced greenhouse emissions does not have to equal reduced oil consumption.

the executive branch does not pass the laws, but they have a lot of pull when it comes to the legislative. if obama really wanted that passed he could get it done. since the legislative branch is a democratic majority, that would help, but hey who knows a few behind closed door deals here and there(you never know what really goes on) and it can get done. but thats if obama wants to commit political suicide

 For heaven's sake. The federal excise tax on a gallon of gasoline is 18.4 cents! Of that tax collected, here is how it's distributed.

    • 15.44 cents goes to the Highway Trust Fund,
    • 2.86 cents goes to the Mass Transit Fund
    • 0.1 cents goes to the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund.

In order for taxes to rise, Congress would have to pass new legislation and the president would have to sign it into law. Guess what?

It's probably going to go happen anytime soon. But it could...

The last two presidents to approve gas taxes were:

I really don't see the value in arguing over presidential "gas tax" politics, because the money collected goes towards our nations highways and freeways which are critical to Interstate trade.

For those that may be interested in the history of gasoline tax, here is a some great information.

    http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/gastax.cfm

Gas prices will go up dramatically not because of taxes, but because of market conditions and a little market manipulation.

If and buts, candy and nuts, merry christmas.

When you've got something other than speculation, come back and talk. Crom pretty much handled things in the next post down. See his reply for what I won't waste time retyping.

In this neck of the woods it's currently $2.49 for Regular 87.

It is expected to go to $3.00 - $3.25 / gal. by summer.

Gas demand is down in the US because of all the pink slips and cars sitting in the driveways.

China is increasing their consumption hence the price of crude going up.
