Heading out west from NY. I just paid $3.30 for 87 octane with 10% ethanol. What are you guys/gals at? I was thinking of getting the Sunoco app or card but do not know much about them.

You can use gasbuddy dot com. They have phone apps, too. Users like you will post gas prices they see, and you can use the app to find the cheapest gas nearby.

To that end, I use one of my BofA cards that gives me 3% back on gas purchases. I am not typically loyal to one brand of gas. Most stations will offer a 10 cent per gallon discount for paying cash. Gas needs to be north of $3.33 per gallon for me to benefit from using the card versus paying cash.

I know this really isn't answering your question, but it may make you feel a bit better..... Maybe? Probably not.

Here in Costa Rice, we're paying the equivalent of $4.55 USD for a U.S. gallon. $1.20 at liter.

Come to California for great gas prices. $4.60 a gallon and up. I’ve seen it over $5.00 per gallon. There’s a great free app called Gas Buddy which shows locations of gas stations, their distance from your current location and directions to get there. It also shows the gas prices at each station.

The high tax California adds to a gallon of gas is probably the most significant reason for high prices there...
Would love to see the map with state taxes backed out...

100% its this. CA has the second highest gas tax rate in the nation. (only being beat by PA)

But it still doesnt add up to the simple fact we get royally effed here in CA.

I am sure that transportation of fuel is also a cost-adder. The fewer refineries you have, the greater the distance the fuel needs to travel to get to its Point-of-Sale.

Wasn't Los Angeles once littered with oil wells and refineries?

Still is. But we do ship A L O T in as we dont produce as much as we use... Still doesnt make sense why gas stations literally miles apart on the AZ/CA border are over a dollar a gallon different

I check GasBuddy every so often. My regular work commute goes by three of the lowest price top tier stations in Sacramento... currently ARCO regular for $4.38 / gallon.

Phone number option. Local area code + 867-5309. 99% chance it works and gets you the typical 5 cents per gallon off. It's a privacy enthusiast thing and multiple people use it to confuse the tracking which also means you occasionally get more off. I think I got 15 cents per gallon once.

So if you were to listen to Dave Ramsey this is totally not on his program. I play the cash rewards game on my credit cards. In order for it to work you have to NEVER carry a balance and ONLY use no yearly fee cards. I also track every transaction in Quicken by downloading daily from my financial institutions so I know where every dime went. I gave up on the airline miles cards because they are too restrictive and never had decent seats for reward users. I have 3 cards and hardly ever use green cash:
    upload_2021-12-13_17-16-5.jpg

I've made over $1,400 in pure spendable cash awards this year. Like I said, you have to NEVER carry a balance or it will get you. To do that make an automatic rule in your credit card bank that automatically pays the statement balance each month.

Before New Jersey raised their gasoline tax to make their prices comparable to New York, it was not uncommon to simply drive across the border (especially the land border on the north side of the state) to fill up. For me, I'd typically fill up going from downstate to upstate via Jersey, as doing it the other way wasn't cost-effective since the the toll to leave NJ on the Port Authority Bridges offset any gas money savings. (I now cross at the Bear Mountain Bridge for $1.45 versus paying the $15 or so extortion the Port Authority begs you to pay.

I'd used to accept the slowness of Full Serve Gas for the discount, but with the discount gone, there is even less reason to buy gas in Jersey..

Last fill up in ca, I was fortunate to find 91 at $4.79, just before it bumped up closer to $5.

The gas buddy app works but look at the last reported how many hours ago. Anything above 20 hrs or so won’t be accurate.
