Not a bad approach, but you need to adjust your charts for the impact of the cash discount at gas stations, and the fact that some restaurants will actually give you a 5% discount if you pay cash... In the end, the merchant is paying for your cash-back via then bank interchange fees that are charged per credit card.

I've personally kept the airline cards not only for the extra sky-pesos, but for the fact that I make out on baggage fees.. I get free bags with the cards. YMMV.

Well, one needs to ask why gas prices are so high... One thing that many don't realize is, that the more fuel efficient a car is, the less tax revenue the state collects, which means that the amount of revenue generator per car-ton-mile travelled drops...

I am just waiting for them to perfect revenue by distance driven, and not fuel consumed. The EV's aren't paying their fair share for road maintenance....

I don’t know about in other states but in WA the state charges an additional fee on top of your annual registration. The fee is to collect unpaid gas tax.

Gas was $5 a gallon in CA in back in 2007. Not many EVs to blame 15 years ago

My facetiousness doesn't translate well into hard copy...

One reason for buying an EV is to save money on fuel costs. States generate revenue for road maintenance by levying fuel taxes, with the reasoning being, those who drive, need gas, and therefore the users pay for the construction and maintenance of roads. I read an article that California has been raising their gas tax in an effort to collect funds needed to repair roads.

Electric vehicles do not pay into the gas-tax pools, yet they put wear and tear on the same infrastructure.

If the percentage of electric vehicles on roads increases, the states will need to come up with a new road construction / repair funding model.

    https://www.ncsl.org/research/energy/new-fees-on-hybrid-and-electric-vehicles.aspx

This article provides a little information. California is one of 30 states that charges additional fees for ev owners to compensate for loss of gas tax revenue. In wa state they take the avg annual miles driven and divide avg mpg for cars on the road to calculate the avg gallons of fuel used per year. Wa is 225$ Fee per year on top of registration fees. You save money on fuel but still pay the taxes.

Hell you get like a 7500$ credit for an ev or something like that here in CA.

Just gotta put up with hours long tesla lines during busy times, no thanks.

Plug in hybrid is the way of the future IMO.

Its already happened in other parts of the world. Governments act quickly if they see revenues go down. EV owners will loose the financial savings in travel soon enough.
Then it'll be the amount of electricity your EV uses. An EV 'guzzler' tax if you will.

I use Getupside. Getting 30 cents back per gallon right now. Just find the right promo codes and the bonuses are pretty big. I think it's like 45 cents back per gallon when you first sign up.

Good point. I do watch for cash discounts and then use a debit card. A local gas station chain has a purchase card that you can use. It’s attached to your debit card. When you buy gas using it you get 3% off. My airline card had a $250/yr fee. I can buy a lot of bags with that.

You give them your email and last 4 digits of your credit card. The gas stations give them a cut for bringing business to them. That's the extent of what I know. I first heard of the app from some Tundra guys, and thought I'd give it shot. Now I use it pretty often.

I just redeem the cash back in Lowe's gift cards, or you can give them your paypal info, which I chose not.

I only get email confirmations about the cash back I got. But I'm the kind of person who unsubscribes from all promotion emails so maybe they send more than that, I wouldn't know.

Dont come to CA for gas... 87 will surely get up to $5/gallon. Everyones trying to make use of their costco membership over here to offset the cost. The wait is ridiculous though just to save a few $.

Well, my Delta Amex is $99 per year. Bags are $30 and $40. With the card, my first bag is free. I typically take two trips out west to ski, and since skis and boots count as one bag, provided they collectively weigh less than 50 lbs, I come out ahead with the card. My carry-on can fit the rest of my stuff.

My JetBlue card has a $40 fee. While I don't get a free bag with that card, I originally signed up for it because the old JetBlue reward points expired in 12 months, and I must have lost 3 round trips worth by not being able to use them in time. With the card, they didn't expire, and now every other flight is free.

The airline cards that are in the $250-$500 range... You need to determine if they are useful to you. Do you get lounge access? Do you get a free companion ticket each year? What about Uber / lyft credit? Everyone's situation is different.

My brother & I share our King Soopers/Kroger account that way we can build points faster. We trade off & it gives us cheaper gas every 2 month. Currently been driving my 08 Corolla more often then my truck to help as well
