Hey guys trying to collect some info on my truck, idk if anyone else is coming across the same thing. I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4. I've noticed since I got my truck, the gas range distance numbers have dropped every time I have had to fill up my tank, also I feel my gas range or mileage is horrible with this truck compared to my previous 2016 taco.

An example of what im talking about is, when I drove my truck off the lot the gas range showed 385 miles to empty since then I have not been able to get that number, my most recent number was 285 miles to empty. Idk if this is something new on the truck or if its an issue should get checked out. I went to my dealer but they didn't have a clear answer for me, they wanted to charge me to check it and I said no thanks.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Mine always say 384 to empty but I’m lucky to get 270 to a tank...usually fill up to 17-18.5 gallons

It may take a few fill ups for the computer to accurately calculate the Distance-To-Empty... mine normally mirrors the last tank mileage. For example, if I have mixed highway and city driving on a tank, I’ll get around 20.5 MPG and my DTE on next fill up will be around 425... if I only do city driving, I may only get 18.5 MPG and will see about 380 DTE on next fill up.

My driving is mix but lately it has been mostly highway and I have been going through full tanks as if gas is free. I have no idea why DTE numbers are going crazy tho, the numbers keeping dropping.

Mine always comes in at 277-284 and I end up getting 325-350+ per tank. Right now most of my driving is <1 mile to/from work Normally I'd be walking and leave the truck at home but just had ankle surgery so cant walk that far

385 to 285 sounds like a lot, but did you get it in early fall and it's been dropping since? if so, maybe just a function of winter gas?

You’d never get that on California’s crap gas.

    Is it also lifted?
Do you have a speedometer calibrator?
Do you leave it idling for extended periods (warm up)?

Winter time millage sucks and if I plow (just my 1500' drive way) it costs me about a 100 miles per tank. 385-400 summer 350 or less winter.

I wondered the same thing too, had similar experience when I bought my truck and drove it off the lot. Screen shows 400 mi to empty on 91 octane, have only filled it with 87 octane since then and have yet to break 375 mi on a full tank. I’ve watched my numbers drop too and have been wondering the same thing

What's your average MPG? I'm not positive, but if you average a low MPG, the truck will estimate your range based on this gas mileage.

I average - I don't know, 18-19 MPG? Just filled up today and it said 416 to empty. If you drive the truck in a less fuel efficient manner, or have bigger tires, or a lift, etc., the truck will get worse fuel economy. These trucks are known for that.

I can't remember if it's based off gas mileage from the last fill-up, the last 3, the last 500 miles - I can't remember. But it takes past driving history into account in some manner or another.

I would unplug the battery for a bit and then reset all the gas milage info in the head unit.
After that the only way this truck gets great milage is if your going downhill with a tailwind. Everything else.... headwinds, hills, etc.. excessive speed and letting it sit and warm up or just sitting warning yourself up will diminish your milage.

OK, let's revive this thread. Mine is a 2016 with 51,000+ miles. It has always said 384 til empty. It's lifted and has 31" tires which are less than 5% taller. It's loaded with about an extra 5-600 pounds and has crap in the roof. I use an app for fuel purchases and related charges which calculates mileage. I'm getting hi 16's to low 17's and that is based on the math. If I drove til empty, I might get 320 miles. It's had plenty of time to "learn" and it's just wrong!
