I've noticed lately that after driving for a while once I stop and shut the engine off that I smell gas vapors all around the front end. Occasionally I will notice the smell in the cabin while I'm sitting at a stop light.

I've only really noticed it starting this winter, its been cold, some days in the negatives and mostly in the low teens. It seems to be more prevalent in colder temps.

What happens is if I drive somewhere, say to work, which is about 10 miles I will get out and I can smell gas near the drivers side fender. I can open the hood and smell a somewhat faint gas smell everywhere under the hood.

Since its cold I dont know if this is normal for the EVAP emissions or not, I dont have a CEL/MIL. MPGs have been averaging around 16-17.5 per tank which seems normal for the cold weather.

During the last service I had the dealer check it out and the dealer said "we looked at it, and we even had the lead tech look at it, he said it is normal for Tacoma's to smell like gas under the hood after driving them, especially the manual transmission ones".

So.... is this normal? Has anyone else noticed this in?

20k miles, DCSB TRD OR, 6 spd manual.

Don't know if it's "normal" - but mine had that issue when I first bought mine, but it went away after a week or so.

You may have the dealership check again just to be sure. I was dealing with the same thing and they found a part that was “crimped” connected to the fuel system causing a fuel leak. I’ll be without my truck for a few weeks now bc the part is on back order. I’m still waiting on my dealer to give me a call back with the part number to know exactly what it is.

Thanks for the info, I'll take it back when I get a chance and see what they say. I've got some fuel system safe UV dye at home so I'm going to dump some of that in tonight and check for leaks too.

It appears SavageTRD17 was correct... I put some UV dye in the fuel tank and drove around for 20 or so miles, checked all over and some fuel lines near the back of the engine in the valley (I assume the high pressure fuel pump) were lit up like a Christmas tree and a there was a dye running down the bellhousing.

The dye is green in the pics. There’s some other colors in there, primarily orange, that were not related. It’s amazing how many common automotive lubricants and items are fluorescent on their own.

Great find OP. You will have to keep me updated on what your dealer says. According to mine they’re “in the dark” on when they will be able to get the part and fix this. Hopefully they will get this taken care of within the next couple of weeks.

Good grief, I’m glad you found the leak, that’s not safe!

I dropped the truck off Thursday, they confirmed the leak, and kept the truck. They called Friday morning to say they ordered the part but its on back order.

They called again today, I should have the truck back Thursday this week.

The part they ordered is 23800-0P020, which according to the knock off Russian Toyota Parts website (ilcats.ru) I found online seems to be the low pressure port injection fuel rail.
