Mid-70s bike. Severe gas tank rust(inside tank).

Have read countless reviews of expensive rust removal products that are $25 or more a gallon + all of the home remedy stuff like gravel/vinegar/etc.

Anyone have success with anything in particular for this situation?

    Thanks for your time.

This thread isn't too old for a revival.

My 95 YZF 600 has a good amount of rust in the tank. I bought a neomydium magnet off Amazon and stuck it on the bottom of the tank. When metal rusts the rust isn't as ferrous but still enough. There's a magnet shaped rust mound on the bottom of my tank now. The magnet is 3"X1/2"

I use milkstone remover available at Tractor Supply. Mix with 5 galloins of hot water pour in the tank and 12 to 24 hours later it will be rust free. Rinse out with hot water followed by a bottle of 90% alcohol to further dry thing out and your cone.

That’s some serious stuff right there. I grew up around dairy cows. I could see how that stuff could eat off rust.

I have a vintage Honda CB400F Super Sport and what I found worked very well for me was just a really good vinegar bath and rinse then after letting it dry coating the inside of the tank with some stuff called Red Kote. There is an Indian restoration shop not far from my house and they use it all the time and were the ones to recommend it to me. In my area some of the radiator shops handle it. My tank was done about 8-9 years ago and the inside is still perfect. It seals the inner surface and leaves it a sort of candy apple red color and it's even good with ethanol fuels.
