In case anyone else was wondering you can also use a fuel tank out of an Isuzu trooper and it will fit where the spare tire is in the first gens. Info is on here somewhere where someone did it before. Been years ago they did it. Use's the same idea and fills the primary tank up with a switch in the cab.

4cyl right? That's important to note.

    18.5 - 3.4 DC.

You don't want to run your tank dry. The fuel pump uses the gas in the tank to help keep it cool. Dry tank means the pump is more likely to fail.

This is also part of the reason a 'reserve' is built into it on the design end of things.

I've never pulled the tank off or cut it open so i can't speak to what's on the inside as far as the Guage goes. Ive noticed my gas light comes on at after I love burned 15 gals of fuel. I believe the reserve is just the extra 3 gals of fuel below the point where the fuel Guage float triggers the light to come on. Since I get about 18mpg (seems to be either hwy or city unless I'm REALLY pushing it) I can feel confident that I have an extra 54 miles to find fuel once my gas light comes on the first time. (Range is about 324 miles). I've pushed it once to about 310+ miles on a tank and was able to put in 17+ gals of fuel in it.

A spare tank would be kickass, but I don't think I would spend the $ on it as I'm cheap as hell. It would be neat to get a fuel line to run from some NATO fuel cans and hook it to a special gas cap that takes the fuel line. (I wonder if there's enough of a vacuum in the fuel line to start a siphon.) That way, you can move it to vehicle to vehicle and can have a variable surplus of fuel depending on how many fuel cans you have. It's not as clean as a 2nd fuel tank I know.

I'll probably just stick to manually fueling with gas cans though.

OK,..OK,...Ok,...lets settle this once and for all. The fuel tank capacity is 21 gallons for a second generation V6 equipped Taco.
After your low fuel level light comes on you have 3 gallons left in the tank.

And that is why you can put about 18 gallons in your tank after your low fuel light comes on when you stop to fill it up.

    And that's a fact Jack.

CoolReed, We understand that, but we are discussing mostly 1st Generation Tacomas here. My factory fuel tank on a 01 Double Cab is 18.5 gallons, not the 21 gallons in your 2nd Generation Tacoma. My low fuel level lights comes on when I have about 3 gallons left in the Tank also, which that seems consistent, but the 1st Generation tanks are overall smaller.

I can routinely put 16+ gallons in my 04 DC. That's if I wait until the light goes on.

    older thread, but...
I'm trying to figure out the 2002 Tacoma I just brought home - it has no owners manual. I think I have a base, 4WD, 2.7L regular cab & bed. Wanting to put some miracle in a bottle into my fuel tank (Seafoam) I need to know the size of my tank. This thread suggests 18 gallons. I went to auto parts warehouse dot com to shop for a fuel tank for my truck & they offered an 18.5 gallon tank & a 16.0 gallon tank "OE replacement".

    18.5 gallon tank :
    2002-2003 | DLX | 4 Cyl 2.4L
    • 2002-2003 | DLX | 4 Cyl 2.7L
    • 2002-2003 | DLX | 6 Cyl 3.4L
    • 2002-2003 | Pre Runner | 4 Cyl 2.4L
    • 2002-2004 | Pre Runner | 4 Cyl 2.7L
    • 2002-2004 | Pre Runner | 6 Cyl 3.4L
    • 2002-2004 | S-Runner | 6 Cyl 3.4L
    • 2004 | Base | 4 Cyl 2.4L
    • 2004 | Base | 4 Cyl 2.7L
    • 2004 | Base | 6 Cyl 3.4L

    16.0 gallon tank :
    2002-2003 | DLX | 6 Cyl 3.4L
    • 2002-2004 | Base | 4 Cyl 2.4L
    • 2002-2004 | Base | 4 Cyl 2.7L
    • 2002-2004 | Pre Runner | 4 Cyl 2.7L
    • 2002-2004 | S-Runner | 6 Cyl 3.4L
    • 2003 | DLX | 4 Cyl 2.4L
    • 2003 | DLX | 4 Cyl 2.7L
    • 2003-2004 | Base | 6 Cyl 3.4L

    Guess I have a 16.0 gallon tank.

Did you perchance buy your 2002 from a TW member? Because I just saw a post in the 1st Gen marketplace where he sold a 2002 minus the owners manual and is now selling it for $20. Either way not a bad price to have one in your possession.
