91 non ethanol because my truck sits for days at a time. It might take a month or two to burn thru a tank of fuel

    I drive a Miata.

First part yes, second part, nah. There are only two methods for working on electrics - reflash it or replace it. There's no cracking into a toasted motor to respool the coils. The future will be even more of a "just throw new parts at it until it works" than the present.

On the plus side, there will be deep discounts for those garage-sized tool chests, since most kids won't understand the point of it. :cookiemonster:

Okay I live at 5-6000 feet above sea level in NM and the gas goes
    86, 88, 93
Ive been using 86 since a couple months after i bought it and it runs fine

It is my understanding that the octane rating was tested at sea level

im assuming OP lives at a high elevation.
    whats your elevation OP?

at the end of the day your truck takes regular gas, not plus or premium

Ethanol free is the only gas anyone should ever use in carburetor engines. The ethanol will gum up the floats and mess up the carb. Small engines (like in mowers) will run issue free for years if you just do 3 things; change the oil, change the spark plug, and only use ethanol free gas.
But in a modern, daily driven vehicle you are just throwing money away on ethanol free.
Though if the vehicle sits for weeks at a time ethanol free is the best. That is what I use in my Miata that gets stored over the winter and driven maybe 500 miles in the summer.

As for premium in non performance engines, the extra cost negates +1 to 2 mpg using premium. If you use shitty fuel from Walmart of course premium from a normal station will preform better but in the real world normal service station 87 vs 91 you will at best get +1mpg.
    20mpg @ $2/gal = $0.10/mile, 22mpg @ $2.50/gal = $0.114/mile
Which means every tank of gas you fill up with premium gas you spend an extra $5.50 to go the exact same distance as regular.
So if you drive 10,000 miles/year that is $130 wasted.

I am an offender too of wasting fuel, dragging a roof rack around on my truck all the time that I only use on the weekends in the summer.
I figured it costs me $10/month to drag that roof rack around but in the end it is your money and you can use it how ever you see fit.
Running premium doesn't hurt anything, at least in the engine.

The only real reason to ever put premium gas in your engine is if you get engine knocks or the manual tells you to.

87 and the occasional tank of 90 rec (ethanol free). I have a few cans of that stored that I swap out every year, fir emergencies and for the yard equipment. It runs in the truck just fine

I do not agree with "waisted"!, you failed to mention that the ethanol "enriched" gasoline puts out about a third less energy than the ethanol free. Ethanol will separate from the gas, it's basically corn alcohol...just because manufacturers say that using up to 10% ethanol is ok...it is not. They don't give a crap and they know most people don't keep their vehicles for 20 years or more...I do:)!

This. I work in a field which is slowly moving to newer technology. The new way of troubleshooting is to accurately identify the failed part (bonus if you can also figure-out why it failed and correct that issue at the same time), replace the failed part (or component) and carry-on. Good or bad I see auto repair going that direction as well.

Correct but incorrect. Ethanol is has 33% less energy density than gasoline, but E10 is 10% ethanol/90% gasoline and only about 3% less energy dense than pure gasoline.

    A few points
    1. I don't know about where you live but ethanol free fuel costs $0.70/gal more than e10 fuel.
    2. Pure gas has 1/3 more energy than pure ethanol, so an ethanol blended fuel means you lose 3-5% of your fuel economy.
    3. The math I did was comparing normal 87 vs 91. Ethanol free will cost you about 25% more than premium 91 for the exact same distance as regular 87 e10.
    4. Like I said and agreed with you, ethanol free is best for vehicles that sit for extended periods of time, ethanol that sits around is very bad for the fuel system. But if you are a daily driver of a modern vehicle ethanol won't damage anything.
    5. Manufactures give a very big crap, they sell 10 year warranties and the fact that 98% of the country uses e10 fuel means they don't want engines breaking down from degraded fuel lines. Plus they have to worry about brand loyalty, just look at all the people that swear they will never own a Ford or Chevy because back in 1985 they had one with a bad engine.
    6. AND wasting money isn't a bad thing. All non commercial vehicles are a waste of money no matter how you look at it, they are not an investment. Like all things in life it's just a matter of how much money you want to spend to be comfortable or entertained.

Also waist is around your hips and waste is in the trash can

Edit: I'm not trying to pick a fight or be mean. If there is something I got wrong please let me know. I am only here for fun and some Taco knowledge, if I wanted a fight I'd talk to my mom about politics, lol. Anyways I said in my original post everyone is entitled to do as they please with their money which is what makes America great.
If ethanol free fuel exists it's good people like you buy it often because it means there is money to be made and they will keep selling it. I only use maybe 25 gallons a year of it but I would be really upset if it disappeared.

My truck has had 87 since new. Great fuel economy and no issues. If I was going to tow in hot weather I'd probably put 93 in it, but doubt it matters.

Your point is valid and same here, I'm not trying to pick a fight. I like the "politics with mom".
You see, I live in Alberta, Alberta to Canada is like Texas to the US. We walk on world's largest deposits of oil in the world, yes more that saudi arabia (which I'm not a fan of since they own Shell). Here gasoline in not cheap, in fact I filled up on th
Hi, same here I don't want to pick a fight. I live in Alberta in Canada. Here everything costs more than in the US. The extra I pay is like that pack of cigarettes I don't smoke. Chances are that we all throw money around on other things that we don't think twice about it.
You mentioned loyalty and trust, I agree but right now with all the "globalization" a Japanese vehicle brand most likely has a third made in china content...so the way I see it they all agreed somehow to make things cheaper...with gasoline like engine oil I try to use premium since that's what I trust. Same psyche applies to other things I do in life. I follow Jay Leno and other car guys and quite often Jay's talks about the crappy quality of gasoline...and yes you might say that he has cars with high compression that require high octane...I'd use ethanol free 87 octane but unfortunately Shell and couple of other gas companies only offer it in premium...$1.35 CND for one litre or about $1 US for a quart (or so)...
