The Tacoma used to be known for being able to travel in all kinds of third world countries, burning the crappy gas offered in Mexico and Central America, the international version, Mr Hilux, can burn the fuel in Africa. This new engine isn’t as flexible on its diet for fuel apparently.

Only major issue i had with the tests this guy is using the same compression engine while not stating if all the gasolines tested were the same fuel grade as shell v-power which i assume is shells top premium gasoline concentrated with the most nitrogen enrichment....i think 5 times more than their lower grades. Of course you'll see some different results.

Don't kid yourself, our TOYOTA is built to take a lot of chit. I remember back around 2004 when a bad batch of fuel (sulfur contamination) from the southern refineries took out a lot of domestic vehicles from LA to FL. It damaged fuel pumps and fuel gauges left and right, a lot from our fleet also. My TOYOTA(s) never missed a beat and I filled at stations that took out a good number of vehicles.

I was glad I had bought a TOYOTA(s) back then built to go places, and still am.

Nitrogen enrichment???? What on earth is the "purpose"?

Last time I was in chemistry going thru the combustion section (many years ago), I learned Nitrogen is NOT combustible.

Of course the unspoken comment is to use "good gas"...that is, go to gas stations and use the grade that get their tanks refilled the most often. You want fresh gas, not gas that is hardly ever used so moisture builds up in it and then you get a tank of "bad gas". I always cringe when I'm riding out in the boonies and need some gas for my motorcycle and there is the only gas station for ninety miles...ugh.

Observation only. When I use 87 or 89 Octane undleaded, I get about 16-16.5 MPG. When I use the 90 Octane Ethanol free, I get on average mid 18.5 to19 mpg. I also have a Leer cap on full time on the TRD Off Road DCLB truck. The proof is in my odometer and mpg readings.

I ran premium e10 fuels in my 3.5 v6 tacoma and got worse fuel economy and performance so i don't know where some are coming from you get better fuel economy with 90 octane. I've consistently gotten better performance and fuel mileage with plain old 87 e10.

You can either believe what people write on this site, or not. My statements are honest, and from my experience. Others may have a different experience with their vehicles based upon many variables (driving habits, terrain, age of vehicle, OV Tuned, re-geared, suspension, tires, amount and weight of accessories, etc.). My best mileage that I have gotten to date with my 2020 Tacoma that currently has just over 7K on it has been 21.9 MPG driving conservatively on straight highway (70 mph) on I-95 from full to refuel/empty on a straight drive long highway run, and that was with the Leer cap (approx 190lb) on the truck. I never got Toyota's advertised 22 mpg even bone stock without anything added on since I bought the vehicle brand new: I also never gotten that 21.9 again, doing the same trip. I can state that I get worse mileage under the same driving condition trip using the 87 octane with the ethanol. That's why I preference and use whenever possible the 90 octane ethanol free gas that is available in my area of the country all year round.

There are no Sunoco refineries and haven't been for years. Sunoco brand gas is the same as CosCo, Sheetz, Wawa, 7 Eleven or any other station selling gas who does not refine their own. That said, all gasoline comes from a name brand refinery ExxonMobile, Shell, Valero, BP. Decide for yourself if you think 'no name' gasoline is different than the others when they all come from the same refineries.

Okay... I'm confused. You are using 85 and the truck runs fine... and you want to pay more for gasoline, WHY???

I live in Utah and run 85 pump gas and don't worry about the octane ratings. Some people just want to overthink.

You'd think all these trucks, bone stock would perform similar driven in a same area of the country, but from what i gather they do not. Question is why?, or are many of these tacoma's no longer bone stock, and now their owners are questioning their performance.

I live in the Denver Metro Area, I have been using 85 Octane in my vehicles for over thirty years and never had any knocking/pings or engine problems. I have used 87 Octane here for $.25 more per gallon and found no difference in performance or gas mileage.

i have used 85 on my old 01 tacoma but i didn’t know if it was still fine with my 3rd gen but i’ll most likely stick to 85 because it doesn’t seem like anyone in utah has a problem with 85 in their trucks
