I have done the math, and given the increase in mpg, it is less expensive for me to run the 91.

I run high octane. When it was crazy pricey I just parked it and drove the other vehicle.

I am going to switch to 93 here and see what it does for my milage. I have been getting a pretty consistent 17.5 - 17.8 for the last couple of month. Was pretty low when I first got it, around 15.5-16, so I feel sure that it has leveled off.

It's all in my head at the moment...
Was a Transport Tanker Driver for Exxon/Mobil 10years ago and can add that it's not wise to fill up while the truck is off loading. Even though the pumps have filters, you do stir up the crud at the bottom of the tanks. The suck tube DOES NOT go all the way to the bottom of the tanks. It's about 3"-7" off the bottom to make sure it doesn't bottom feed. Before you drop your load (Gigity) you stick the tanks for measurement with a paste on the lower 5" of the stick. If that paste turns red....that's water. Anything over 3" is a no drop condition and the tanks have to be pumped out prior to receiving another load. If the driver is not lazy and plays by the rules...this pasting is done every time. I'm not so sure about unbranded stations. I know I never did before I went to the big league.

I've tried ethanol-free gas too here lately. There is a station/truck stop in Columbia SC that advertises 100% gasoline. I didn't notice a difference in mpg. I just did a 1000 mile round trip to Tampa this weekend past and fueled up with mid-grade at branded stations. I averaged 20mpg with the cruise set at 75 (average) and the a/c on (fat guy).

I ran my tests and found high octane gives me better mileage but same price per mile. If it is any better on my engine then all the better! I like not having to fill up as much a getting around ethanol any time i can

I've been running premium as I read it might help with the 4.0 ticking. Nothing so far but after reading Chris's write up I may stick with it.

Just wanted to add to watch out for gas stations that sell more than two grades of gas and have only two storage tanks. Friend of a local inspector warned me about this.

Thats good to know! Does this happen to be the truck station right off of I20 with the big light-up sign? I was curious about it at first, but it sounds like you found no positive gains.

I run the lowest octane I can with no pinging/knocking. You'll make the most HP with the lowest octane as well. Higher octane just means it burns slower to avoid predetonation. I have no issues at all running 87.

that's not true for the 4.0L.

The slower burning to avoid predetonation allows the compression to be higher.

According to everything I have found online, 91+ makes the most power in the 1GR-FE. Correct, higher octain has less specific energy, but thats to reduce pre detonation at higher degrees of timming advance. If vehicles could make more power on less octain fuel, Corvettes and the like would be running lower octain fuel.

I have tried both. I do to much offroad and heavy traffic driving to notice an increase from premium. I have a 09 6 speed. I get 16.7 - 17.46 mpg every tank no matter what I stick in it. I do try to only buy from name brand stores (Exxon, Shell and Texaco) I get pinging from the local kwiky-mart so I don't buy there anymore.

I have had my truck 6 months and have a little over 15,000 miles on it.
