I have a 2017 Tacoma. My cluster broke and is no longer working. I want to purchase a used one online. Will my original miles show up on the new (used) cluster or will the cluster show the miles from the donor car?

Why not go to the Dealer and find out what's up? Odometer readings are not something to mess with, maybe a wire or something came lose.

Not sure if that is even legal. Generally, vehicle mileage is married to the cluster.

my apologies, I don't think I explained well. I was wiring my car alarm and I had removed the cluster which ended up falling off a bench i had and broke. Like the plastic casing and the screen. It does not turn on anymore. I was going to purchase a new one from the dealership but they are expensive! I saw some online used. But I want to make sure that the new (used) cluster does not show the mileage of the donor car. I am not trying to roll back miles. I don't know how that's possible with a digital cluster.

If you get a new or used cluster, you should probably take it to the dealer and ask if they need to transfer data.

It should just swap over. But you can probably get one from LKQ and if it does not work you can always return it. Most toyotas you can just plug and play. Atleast for the ones I have replaced

@Modesto Tacoma That's what I was thinking and hoping. Cause these new smarter clusters typically (I would think) display what the computer is telling them. So If i was to replace it even with a new one the original miles of my vehicle should show up.

Unfortunately I think these clusters store the mileage inside them.
Source: we ever need to replace them under warranty, we have to ground the vehicle and submit forms including vin and mileage so that they can be programmed at the factory.

I Asked the dealer for the clear plastic on the cluster, he misheard me and thought I wanted the whole cluster. Made it seem like an ordeal, Vin, title, ID, my first newborn etc.

@tonered anything in TS about the cluster?

The replacement odometer does not have to be sync to the vehicle but you do have to put a odometer replacement sticker somewhere visible in the vehicle to be legal. What I don’t know is if the odometer information is shared with other modules in the vehicle thru the CAN bus if that’s the case without the proper computer algorithm you won’t be able to sync everything up.

My three year old Hyundai Elantra digital instrument cluster went out on me with about thirty thousand miles on it. Unit was replaced under warranty. Hyundai tech did not reset unit.
A few thousand miles later, my ride was totaled. I informed the insurance company that the unit was recently replaced. Insurance still compensated me as if my three year old car only had twelve thousand miles on it.
