Wait I forgot about pinion bearing preload... I've built 4 diffs now and have done that by feel everytime. Nothing's blown up yet lol

Back to turbo, did you just find a EBay chinurbo, or that kit you posted, or what?

Yeah. It's really not as complicated as everyone makes it out to be. Never fully built one from start to finish, but have helped a few times.

Found a knockoff t3/t4 on craigslist for cheap so I snagged it. Going to use it to build and place everything then run it till it blows and replace it with a better one. This is the perfect size though

Agreed, it's more tedious than difficult. I haven't had to shim the carrier though since older toyota 8" and LC 9.5" use threaded side adjusters which make things easy

The new ones are threaded adjusters too. It's just the pinion that requires proper shimming the backlash can be adjusted with the adjusters.

Haven't decided yet. Going to see what's out there but if I can't find something that places the turbo where I want it I'll just go the old log style setup

I did the preload on Sam's 4Runner by feel, we couldn't find a beam in-lb torque wrench that day and had to get it done that day. For mine I need to get the hole adapter for the dial indicator and that torque wrench and I'll be set. Just bought the Yukon bearing puller last week.

Yup, second Gen still uses essentially the same third member as a 1st Gen. I'm not sure about the front diffs though, I'd imagine those are different.

The 8.4 has shims if I'm not mistaken. The front between the 1st and 2nd gens are basically the same just the later is an 8 inch vs 7.5. I think the front has one carrier adjuster but not sure, research on those has been fairly slim.

Hmm, maybe I'm thinking of the elocker axle then. I guess I'll need to make an assembly bearing then if it is shim rings.

Look into building a dummy bearing, it's worth it to not have to press the pinion bearing on and off over and over

I was also under the impression the 8.4 has shims

the MYTH cleared up. The 8.25/8.4, whatever is not. It is a 8" gear. The casting is better still. The carrier bearings are shimmed, rather than screw in adjusters. The ring gear has 12 bolts instead of 10. Also, the carrier bearing caps are connected with "girdles" and are cast as one piece. This diff I will simply call the late model v6. The pinion shaft is larger, the bearings are slightly lager and the casting is beefier than earlier versions. However, THE RING GEAR IS NO LARGER THAN EALIER 8" DIFFS!

Pinion bearing for the elocker is 90 bucks, the bearing in the truck now is going to be my set up bearing. Plus the factory pinion depth shim comes in handy to making set up faster.
