Gear hunting is a term used my owners of automatic transmissions that should have bought a CVT instead.

Independently, the engine is excellent, and transmission is bullet proof. The problem that many observe is that the engine design wants you to rev higher to make power while the tranny’s shift programming wants you to slow the fun down to save a buck or two in gas.

If you tow, drive it like it’s the final lap at Daytona, or roll up & down a lot hills on your way to work, it may not be the truck for you and we’ll probably hear your complaints on this forum. Fortunately I live where it’s flat and get 20mpg so all good here.

Try deleting learned values. I did on my 22 in November after buying mine in October. For the first 500 miles after deleting I would every 30 or 40 miles floor it and let the trans do it job. No gear hunting no nothing now. Shifts like an old GM th350 now.

Comparing apples to oranges there, on the Jeep... 8 speed auto, and 6 speed auto, with a passenger (comfort) vehicle, and "truck". having the 8 speeds will allow it to be in the correct gear, for just about most situations. think pedal bike with multiple gears, grab the one you need for the riding at hand. and also guessing the trans logic, is a ton smoother in the 8 vs the 6, to give you a more "seamless" less shifting feeling but, I guarantee you... it is shifting a bunch.

Also... the camry is close to a 1000lbs lighter than the tacoma so... if we could take 1000 lbs off the tacoma, it would feel peppier, and not shift as much, lugging around that added weight. your results, may vary. Ski

Put it in ECT and S4 around town and you’re done. No more manual shifting required unless you’re on a flat road with higher speeds and then S5.

    Ain’t no thang.

Ok for starters this is not a “truck” it’s a confused Camry at best.
I was ready to get rid of my ‘21 after 6 months, threw an OTT tune at it but that barely helped. Then almost by accident, I ended up with a set of 255/75/17’s threw them on and just like that it’s a new ride. Gear hunting is 95% gone, power band is much more accessible. As others have said the motor is good, the power is there. In my opinion it’s a gearing issue.

Yep and it doesn’t even drive as well as a real Camry.

    * for the record my wife bought it and gave up on it after two months, she promptly commandeered my GX.

The ECU has a component of AI that can learn how you drive. Also the other component is what Toyota calls "Force Value" Its when the the transmission and engine have a meeting and try and anticipate what your going to do next with the "input" aka gas peddle. Sometimes resulting in confusion leading to a short hesitation. The transmission will also sense when you are going down a steep hill and down shift for you whether you like it or not.. Deviate from stock with bigger tires and heavy add-on's the grief increases.

I have learned what to expect and intervene with S-Mode and or with ECT when I need to take over from the computer to take back control. A tune will help do this as well.

Could not agree more with you two. At the end of the day pick your poison. All to lower emissions whether you like it or not. You can pick one.

    1. Engine stop start.
    2. AFM (active fuel management), aka cylinder deactivation.
    3. Toyota’s famous “Taco Tune” to lower emissions on Tacoma’s.
    4. Turbocharged, smaller displacement engines.

What’s it going to be? Not including Hybrids or EV’s.

S4 helps, but I find ECT useless around town. 2800-2900 RPM in 3rd driving 35mph is just not acceptable.

Toyota needs to take a lesson from Nissan with the new frontier drivetrain. Nissan actually did a good job with it.

Sorry if I came off a little surly. I drove a 4.0/5spd combo prior and agree there is a noticeable difference.
