    1st, go check your rear pumpkin for a label with a letter. Sr5 has A4 for axle code. The rumor is the rear diff is 3.73 ratio(from 2nd gen trd). That's why there are tons of sr5 folks have this smirk about gear hunting.

    I have the A4 letter on my 2020 sr5 but it's a 3.90 axle ratio. First I've heard of a 3.73 in a Toyota truck.

    How do you know you have 3.90?
    Some sports have A07 axle, all SR5 since the beginning have A04

    A = 8.0"/205mm
    B = 8.8"/225mm - Sport MT

    01 = 3.583:1
    02 = 4.100:1
    03 = 3.153:1
    04 = 3.727:1
    05 = 3.307:1
    06 = 4.300:1 - Sport MT
    07 = 3.909:1

    A = Open - Sport MT
    B = E-Locker

    I actually had the same feeling since I came over from a 1997 Isuzu trooper 2 speed. I got the KD max tune though at 700 miles and then I realized what the gear hunting was, after the fact. Just a much smoother more responsive shifting and revving truck now.

    Op,
    also don't forget that you have a different ECU/TCU calibration compare to early years. There were some adjustments done to torque converter (large contributer to the dead pedal), etc. on most recent years.
    Personally, I did not experienced a gear hunting even living in hilly area, but we all suffered from a criminally dead pedal back in the day.

    That was another thought I had. Maybe they'd made changes to newer models so it's not as bad.

    Just make sure you compare apples to apples. There is a variation between trims and years

    It's all a conspiracy by the big tuning software companies. I could get on board with that. :tinfoilhat:

    Interesting point. I have to admit that about 90% of the modifications I've made on my truck were from reading TW. I didn't necessarily think mine drove 'bad' pre-tune (aside from the accelerator lag), but post KDMAX it is MUCH nicer to drive....so I guess the utility of any mod is really in the eye of the 'modder.'

    One of these days, I need to take myself for a spin in one of those automatics and see what all the hubbub is about. What makes the complaints so confusing is that they are all over the map. Everybody wants theirs to shift "correctly" - what exactly is correct? Half of them bitch that it shifts at too high of an rpm, others bitch that it lugs and shifts at too low of an rpm and is always in too high of a gear. Then other folks complain that it downshifts to 4th or 3rd on hills. The first two scenarios I kinda get - I'm one of the lugging complainers with most automatics. I absolutely despise when an auto chooses to be in a tall gear all the time and wants to cruise at 1200 rpm in 6th gear at 40 mph. Screw that. Tunes advertise that they "fix" the shifting, but again, nobody knows what "fix" really means because everybody has a different definitition of what fixing does.

    What I don't get, is people complaining about downshifting. One of the entire purposes of an automatic is to downshift itself when the conditions warrant. I'd be glad if it were downshifting a lot, because that's how I drive manuals. What I really hate is when I have to hit the gas 50% or more just to get it to downshift. Talk about a poor driving experience.

    Of course, I have not driven one or multiple automatic Tacomas, so I do not know what the norm even is, if there is a norm. Seems like some people have different experiences than others as well, so maybe straight from Toyota the trucks are not all that consistent. Idk. I definitely would like to drive a few and see how they compare. Either way I'm glad I have the manual but I wish I had more experience with the nuances with the automatics because the complaints get tiresome to read when they are so confusing and inconsistent between people.

    This happened to me last week driving on the freeway and had to gun it to get around a slow moving truck while I had a sweet spot to my left to get into the next lane over. Truck nearly redlined out of the blue and I had to take my foot completely off the gas to get it to drop. It was freaky.

    I'm at 15k miles, first time the gear hunting happened to that extreme level. I didn't have it floored by any means, just needed some punch and boy did I get it.
