You are not missing anything. This “complaint” is way overblown on here.

It’s a transmission with 2 overdrive gears. Even the manual says to use s4 or s5 in hilly/mountainous/city driving. Most people chose to ignore that page and post a thread on here complaining how terrible “transmission logic” is.

I drive a manual and even I know about the “S” mode in the Tacomas.

It is most noticeable at freeway speeds on steeper hills (I'm in CA - driving between San Diego and Temecula on I-15 will do it to ya!). I usually keep the speed down around 60 and it doesn't gear hunt. ONce I get up to 65 it starts to do it. It is just annoying.

I don't get it at all on surface streets or flat roads or slight inclines at lower speeds.

Sir, it’s a high revving v6. Makes peak power at 4K+ RPMs. Your transmission downshifted like it was designed to do…

Lol. I'm well aware of what is posted on TacomaWorld. The problem is NONE of it is consistent. Read my post again...everybody complains about something different. I want to see how one actually drives as I don't trust the complaints of many others.

To be honest I never thought of that. I use S mode going down steep hills to help out not riding the brakes. Had not thought of it on uphills at higher speeds. I will give it a try next time I think it will gear hunt. (For the record I don't find it a big problem but I do notice it)

I'm not complaining, I'm making an observation that I hadn't experienced in 15K miles of driving it. And I wasn't at 4k, I was nearly at 6k and couldn't get it to come down. I've never redlined a vehicle before and I felt like I didn't have control over it. Like I said it wasn't even floored.

Freaky? Why? Anything below redline is the safe zone. Your computer is too smart to put you outside of the safe zone.

Edit: did not see the comment above mine when I posted this one.

Give it time, the transmission will learn your habits. It’s a actually a very intelligent transmission.

You could spent a few days to read some of the old threads to get familiar with basics of at tacoma ecu/tcu before painting with a broad brush..

22 here also with 4K miles. No hunting. Need to pass push skinny pedal and it downshifts like it should. Let off pedal and it up shifts back.

I'm with the OP on this one - got zero complaints about my 2021 - drives like a dream compared to what I came from, wouldn't change a thing.

I've had a 2020 sr5 v6 auto for the last 3 years. The transmission shifted funky for the first 1200-1500 miles till it learned my driving habits, and general road conditions I traveled. After that it seemed the engine even made a lot more power and the transmission worked spot on. To this day the truck has been perfect...no complaints. From what I've heard not all tacomas with an auto work the same. You can get one like myself, or others have, or you can get one that performs like a pos as a buddy had.

The trucks are the same coming off the line.
The only variable in the equation is the driver and their driving habits.

Among other things at work I provide the IT support. I like to tell people that the problem is between the chair and the keyboard. Then I sit quietly and wait for them to figure that out.

Ha ha. Having spent 30+ years in the I.T. industry I'm surprised that is still an issue, then again, not really.
