I guess my old tundra spoiled me. That truck started throwing heat in 2-3 minutes when it was well below freezing.

I think besides my two 2nd gens, my current 3rd gen warms up pretty decent. I've had a couple VW's that took a while to warm up as their cooling system was way overbuilt. The Subaru takes a good 15-20 minute drive before it gets decently warm inside when it's 32° or below.

Same here. I suspect you and I are both using more than 6% open on the throttle opening. The way I drive, mine typically will hit 5th gear at 42-44MPH.

I think there's way too many differences with road conditions, and how you drive (throttle opening) to say that graph would be the norm.

There ought to be a way to approach this at least semi-scientifically with some kind of poll that sorts everyone into year, trim, gear ratio, etc. Then find out if they experience it or not and if so what they did about it. But it would have to be someone who knows all the variables and that ain't me that's for sure.

I’ve been driving my 2020 for 3 years and have never experienced any weird transmission shifting. Most of the problem originates from a bad gasket between the seat and the steering wheel.

This! 1000%. It's in a hurry to get to the next gear then when it does it can't "pull" it.

That's weird. I get about 1.5 miles into my morning commute on a day like today (mid 30's) and I'm getting heat.

A friend at work bought his 2019 SR5 V6 shortly after I bought my 2019 SR. After about a week he asked me “does your Tacoma shift gears back and forth a lot? So annoying, I’ve started using ECT.”
He’s never been on TW and I don’t agree with your assumptions.
My SR 2TR-FE is fine by me, I use ECT around town and on occassion even on the highways. If grade changes cause excessive shifting I just drop it into S mode. I learned how my truck works and now it works for me. Not a problem.

So new to the Tacoma community, it makes me wonder how the Tacoma became the by far and away midsize sales leader with as many complaints as I see on this board. As well as the resale value leader second only to the other conundrum of resale value the Jeep Wrangler. After seeing all these complaints and then the overall impracticality of the Jeep Wrangler, how did these 2 vehicles become the resale value leaders?

    here is a disclaimer

BTW. 6% throttle is the accelerator's mid range. Ideally, you shoud monitor Output Shaft speed.
    upload_2023-2-13_8-8-28.jpg

here is upshift schedule for 3-4.4-5.5-6 from a stock calibration. Speeds are some loose conversions of output shaft speed to kmp

Here is other software that uses Output shaft speeds

Very true. Been driving mine 3 years also...transmission works great. I try not to use any of that S, or ECT crap unless needed for towing. Found the more it's used it can screw up your transmission's iq.

why is the throttle only opening 6%? seems like a strangely arbitrary number

Other manufacturers were worse, or had a gap in production (Ranger)

A lot of these complaints are quite overblown. Have been driving Toyota trucks for 30 years, they are fairly reliable for the most part, why they have such a great reputation and maintain quite good resale. The 3rd Gen is leaps and bounds better than the old stuff, however not perfect. Also have to consider these are all-a-round compromise vehicles, it is a master of nothing (you can’t make everyone happy) and that is ok….there thousands upon thousands of owners who don’t frequent these boards and are perfectly happy with the platform. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t sell like they do.

The other manufacturers are finally catching up to Toyota, however their reliability has yet to be seen. That said, from personal experience Toyota’s reliability is a bit overhyped. Blame the internet on its growth in popularity and somewhat inflated resale. It wasn’t always like that, used to get teased for owning “Jap Crap”. Used grab used ones for next to nothing. Could also blame nostalgia on why the old stuff is going for bonkers now.

As for Jeep Wranglers, heritage and they are cool and capable. So people put up with the short comings. 3 of the people I work with have them and always complain how it constantly needs fixing, I tell them to sell it and buy a Toyota for cripes sake. “But we love our Jeeps!” So there you go.

Winner. I had the same thought about my '18 until I took it from my hometown (Houston) to CO. Then I understood what the fuss was about.
