about to service the transmission on my 99 taco. It's a 5 speed manual and I was told by a shop it takes transmission fluid. Just wanted to see if anyone has any input.
I know in some cases manual trannys will use tranny fluid but it's pretty rare.

    Thanks! One last question.
I'm also changing my differential fluid. Does 75/90 sound correct?

Yup, use GL-5 in those though.

You can use regular GL-5 in your transmission just fine, saying otherwise is a Tacoma wives tale.

If you use synthetic, GL-4 is recommended to avoid possible minor shifting irregularities. Results vary.

I use 75w-90 GL-5 in everything just to keep it simple and change it out ~25k T-case and rear diff and ~50k tranny and front diff. My other truck uses the same oil, so I buy the shit in bulk.

This is why I just use GL4/5 :D can't argue with that

Interesting. Coming from working on mostly DTM cars. Most of their manuals use ATF equivalent to whatever the a/t for that model uses. Usually its Dex3 for LT71141 standard. Only since 2010 or so have i seen BMW and Mercedes start to go to gear oils, mostly GL-4 or GL-5 spec.

    Just find it interesting.

I bet the owners manual tells you what kind of oils to use?

Usually not for a manual transmission since there isn't a dipstick

As a matter of fact, it does. (Yes, I realize the attached excerpt is from my '04 Owner's Manual but, having seen the same information in my son's '01 Owner's Manual, I'm relatively certain it's available in all of them.)

What does the absence or presence of a dipstick have to do with whether the Owner's Manual provides lubrication specs?
