I know the current Tacomas (Gen 2) Pre-runners with the 2.7L 4 cyl motor come with 4.10 ratio gears and can pull 32" tires pretty well. Your motor is likely a bit less torque so you may want to run 4.56 gears. The 4.56 will make yur truck quicker all around, but the drawback being when crusing down the interstate in top gear your RPM is a bit higher and likely less fuel efficient.

Other factors to consider are if you have skid plates and sliders, plate bumpers (or anything and everything with weight). The more weight you have to move the more you want those 4.56 or even 4.88 gears. Taller tires are just part of the formula.

That's true, i'm looking for some more torque so i think those would do better for me. How would it equate to less mpg's? i thought the 4.10's would take more to turn the wheels and that would be the one on the lower end? i'm probably wrong but that's just how i would think it through

Also, which brand would you guys recommend?

Early tacomas came with 456,430 gears with auto trans. You can locate stock gears in junk yards, here on tw,etc. I'm sure some 410's were mixed in there also. These are all stock gears for tacos. I think what card 1 was talking about was the 456 gears on highway run rpms to 3000 at 70mph. The high rpms obviously use more gas. I might be wrong because I'm sure these were 8 in diff gears and 4x4.

My 3.4 has 4.10s. I used to have 32's and it was fine. Once I went up to 33's I noticed I lost some power, but not much. I found a good deal on a S/C and installed it. It pulls great now. Since you have a 2.4, I'd def say 4.56. Goodluck

Thanks guys, I'll go with 4.56

Which brand? 4wheelparts has G2 but I've heard Yukon & trail gear are favored

There is a group buy going on right now for Nitro gears. These are very good and 20% off NOW. I will try to post the link.... But it is sponsored by East Coast Gear Supply (ECGS) and they are one of the best suppliers out there.

I wouldn't screw around with trying to get both front and rear diffs redone correctly from a shop that isn't ECGS or Zuk. Zuk wont touch the front clamshell so that narrows your options even more.

I would look on www.car-part.com for factory 4.56 gears. One thing to keep in mind is that a decent number of 96-02 4Runners came with 4.56's so you will have to get the front diff from a 4 cylinder 4Runner and the rear from a prerunner Taco.

    here you go...
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/group-buys/319977-ecgs-group-buy-gears-lockers.html

Just have the work done by a legitimate differential shop that specializes in differential work and has done plenty of Toyotas. It is not rocket science, but a simple mechanic without the proper tools or knowledge can screw up your whole axle in a couple thousand miles. Get references specifically for differential work they have performed.

I would not screw with used gears myself because they may be worn and you still have to pay the same for set-up. Your call, but new Ring and pinion is only $170 and you should use new bearings anyway. The gears are only a part of the total price why gamble to save $60?

Haha well i've been having this debate with just going with 31's and 4.10's or bodylift to clear 32's and 4.56.. I have the bodylift waiting but it's the sake of having it installed b/c i don't have the friends or tools to help. Still torn between the tire sizes lol

I'd do suspension over body lift, unless it's only 1" :notsure:

I definitely agree but I've maxed the suspension lift options available for my truck lol, the rear is about to recieve 2" shackles but the front is as far up as it'll go.
