Going to have a little mix of a few questions here. BUT... Im running a 2006 Doubble Cab SR5, 6" lift on 35" rubber with the auto tranny. Im looking to get it re geared because the stock gearing, well just does not cut it. Engine definatly labors up any half sized hill and always gears down, so I can forget about trying to tow anything behind it. (my boat and my sled)

Ive looked through these forums and forums on a few other sites, and Ive been arguing with myself over getting it re geared to 4.56 and 4.88. The issue is that everyone tells me the 4.88's are weak, and I am by no means gentile on my truck. Issue two is any shop ive contacted to do the work cause I dont trust myself with that kind of a job, tell me that 4.56 does not exist for my tacoma. Lastly, Im getting quotes that near the $4000 mark. Unfortunately I live in a rural area in Ontario Canada. And thinking about a good locker for the rear, air VS electronic. My diff is currently open and its hurting me lol.

At this rate, its going to be cheaper for me to drive south of the border and find a good shop in the states, hotel and partying fees included.

Can anyone shed some light on my grim situation? Anything would be of great help! Thanks a bunch in advance!

I just re geared my truck with lockers like month ago. I would go with 4.56's. My cost for two arb lockers, 4.56 nitro gears was and installation was 4300 bucks. Huge difference from 3.73 gears that is for sure. But Gas mileage has suffered little for it.

My gas mileage is already suffering bad lol. Having the 35s really put a dent in it. But my issue with the 4.56 is that EVERY shop Ive talked to says that 4.56 gears dont exist for my truck... so I might have to order my own in or travel for a shop.

I would check out Eastcoastgearsupply.com where they have the 3rb and clam built, where a shop or you can just drop it in. Also talk with chase he will give you the low down.

Check out East Coast Gear Supply. If you trust yourself and have the tools, you can buy assembled diffs from them and install those diffs yourself. Pretty easy really.

On a side note. I would get the 4.88's! You are an auto with 35's. Manwithoutaplan is a manual so he is geared different than us. I am running 4.88's on 33's and love it. Can't wait to get 35's or bigger.

I got 4.88's preassembled with an ARB in the front diff (have the factory e-locker in the rear) Cost me $2250 counting the locker and shipping and such, so may cost a bit more for you since you live in Canada and and have a different rear end than me.

From the sounds of it though, you will love the gears:D

I considered the 4.88 gears, but my research tells me that for my rear end, they are weak... so the with the amount of stress id put em under, they would not last me :(

What all do you do with your rearend? I abuse mine in every way except for towing and my 4.88's have held up just fine. Blew up the factory 3.73's in the first month I owned my Tacoma though. haha
