    Looking forward to seeing how it goes with you. I also have a 3rd gen 5spd and have been thinking about how bigger gears would work for my uses.

    lot of people running this size with no issue - including 4 cyl folks. most tires this size are probably only 5 lbs more than the 235s he's running if his current set is E rated. but usability is definitely subjective and i understand that

    if he's wanting to go offroad, a locker and bigger tires will get him there. add the gears later. you said it yourself - he already doesn't use 5th... just keep not-using it. just my opinion

    you would know more about the drivability than me (i see you have a 4 cyl). i've owned a lot of modified toyotas, but no 4cyl trucks.

    he wont rub with 255s though. they will tuck (unless his wheels are a strange offset). might need to trim some plastic or remove the mud flaps, but should be very limited.

    Unsprung weight applies to everything below the springs, not just the parts that are rotating. Unsprung weight is important in discussions about ride quality, but not when talking about diff gears.

    Correct. Rotational mass is a part of unsprung weight and consequently the part that most directly affects acceleration, which shorter gears help to offset. What's your point?

    I think using the term "unsprung weight" to refer to the rotational inertia of the tires in imprecise and misleading. The fact that it is below the springs is not important when talking about the rotational inertia of the tires.

    Cool, let me fix that:

    "When he moves up to e-rated 255/85/16s that will add a shitload of rotational mass and OP says he basically doesn't get into 5th gear even with the 235s. He's gonna need gears without a doubt"

    This might be off topic but since I saw lift on the description, how Many inches do I need to lift my sr5 to be able to install 33 inch tires without doing anything to the tire well.

    Anybody know if someone makes good 4.56 gears that will fit my 2016 5 speed? 4.88 is probably overgeared for my use, but the stock 3.9 is undergeared. I have been thinking of finding some 4.3 takeoffs from another 3rd gen, but I don't know if that would make enough of a difference relative to the cost of labor.
