After sleeping on this I'm actually leaning more towards 4.56 for higher end... lots of highway driving to get my moto out to the desert, going skiing, etc. Idk. I suppose there's time to discuss.

It's such a hard process as there is such a variation people to people. Generally though it's better to be over geared as you can always remedy it with bigger tires :D

I have been known to be a bad influence.

In my situation though my trucks over 6000lbs and I don't have my tent, fridge or gear in. I was advised from ecgs to go with 4.88's based on my situation and from looking at other builds with similar setups.

Which makes perfect sense. That being said, I'll soon be in the same boat, with 35's. 4.88's definitely seems like my best option

    Opinions requested.

Truck: 2015 DCLB w/ 4.0 auto. 255/85s (will probably go to 285/75s this fall), steel skids, steel bumpers (F+R), sliders, winch, topper.

Situation: Weekend warrior who is partial to low end power BUT will be towing a 5K lb travel trailer occasionally this year, 100% for 8 or so months next year, then occasional duty from there on out. Little desire at this point to consider 35s and don't want to crush my non-towing fuel economy unnecessarily. ECGS recommended 4.88s, local shop recommends 4.56s.

    Thoughts?

My opinion on this for those looking for them is that with 33s, 4.56 gears are not good. I put my gears in (4.56) with 285/75/16, auto trans and lots of armor/weight. On the highway I was pushing 3000 rpms at 70-80 MPH which was unpleasant and didn't help mpgs. Sure in 4 low offroad it was fantastic but the gains there were not enough to justify the repercussions of daily drive use. Stock low range ratios are pretty good on these trucks.

However, I recently went up a tire size to 285 75 17 and the 4.56 gears are perfect. I still get good low range but the highway is closer to stock. Its amazing that the 1" in tire height balanced out the ratio so much. I share similar uses to what most of you have where the truck is a daily driver and weekend warrior. I probably don't get out as much as some right now, so the highway compliance has a little more sway but I even if I was going offroad I would be hesitant to go higher that 4.56 gears with any less than 34" tires on an auto trans.

Again, this is my opinion so take it for what it is worth. Hopefully it helps someone in their decision.

Thanks Zach! I was thinking the same thing. I have 255/85r16 coopers (ST Maxx) and I feel the RPMs on the hwy (I70 in particular) are about where they should be, even when i am pulling a 2K lbs trailer. But I am thinking of going to 285/75r17s so I think making the jump to a 4.56 will make more sense when i get the bigger tires

I am interested in the 4.56 pricing

    Thanks

    4.56. That's already overgeared. No idea why they'd say 4.88. You'd be close to 2.9 - 3k rpm at 75mph.
