I currently have 265/70r17 on my taco, i plan on moving up to 35s and wanted to know what gears i should put. I’ve heard that 4.88 or the 4.56 gears work for 35s but what disadvantage would i have with 5.29 (just in case i want to add more weight to the truck and/or have even bigger tires). also, don’t wanna burn a hole in my pocket going so what brands are good on a bit of a budget?

You have the 4cyl? AT or manual? If you want to run 35's and potentially add armor in the future I would do 4.88's for manual, 5.29 if auto.

I have not regeared (stock 4.10), so others will have better first hand advice & experience.

I have 255/80r17s and Nitro 4.56s in a v6 auto. It is near stock for RPMs. 4.88s would be the starting point for 35s imo. Everyone has different goals and mine was to hold gears on inclines. For that, 4.56s on my tire works great.

Don't cheap out on gears or the install. Follow the break-in procedure or it can be a long expensive process.

yeah 35s are not the move, all the money and labor just doesn’t seem worth it to have a 3” bigger tire. Thanks all you guys for the support though! :bananadance:

255/80R17 is tall skinny 33, which I hear 4.10 is optimal
I am surprised you didn't find a 4banger to pull the diffs out of and slap into your truck to get that 4.10 ratio for cheap.

    shop regear is like $3k
used front and rear diff from a 4cyl is like $300

if 4.10 is optimal for 33 then bigger is probably needed for 35

I agree. I want to list for sale my basically new 33's to go 35 and maybe DIY regear
but I have a feeling by the time I have the 33's dismounted and ready for sale, all the interest it'll get will be 2 lowballers tirekicking offering $200 for a $1k new set of tires.
Just like with every other Tacoma part or really anything sold, ever.
"Can I buy your $40+ excellent condition IKEA night stand for $5?"
No, as it's now broken from throwing it into the dumpster which I enjoyed more than meeting with a person ugly enough to ask something like that

Yeah i have the prerunner so it has the 4.10 already, maybe i’ll do your size, but for now i’m happy with saving all the money.
