Ok my question is, can you swap front axle gears from a 3rd Gen 4runner V6 A/T 4WD that has gears reading A04A? And my second question is what about a 1st Gen Tacoma 4 Cylinder A/T 2WD that has rear gears reading B04A to my 02 Double Cab V6 A/T 4WD B03A? Is it possible??

No expert here, but here are my thoughts, in a nutshell :

    1 - front diffs are swappable (3g 4R to 1g Taco)

2 - rear diffs are much more complicated. 5-lug diffs are different from 6-lug diffs ( not swapable) . elocked Taco diffs are different from non-elocked Taco diffs ( not swappable ). Even if they are physically swappable, the donor rear diff gear ratio MUST match up to the vehicle's front diff gear ratio.

Ok good to know and how would I tell if it has an e-locker rear?

The diff itself will have the actuator (and electrical connection) on the driver-side of the diff, you can't miss it.

And this is for the front and back or the front? I haven't had much work with gears

Duhh :D haha anyways so I'm looking at this 01 tacoma at a junkyard that has 4.56 gears and it's a 4 cylinder 6 lug 2 pinion but I don't think it has the e-locker option on it, can I install the one I have on my truck on it?

What are you asking exactly? As long as the donor and your truck is a 6 lug and not a e lock rear, the third member or gears can be swapped over without issue...is that what you needed to know?

Ok, I have an e-locker diff with 4.88s and a front diff with a mechanical locker in my 2nd gen T4R that I'm starting to part. How difficult will it be to swap the front diffs? I don't know if I want to swap the 4.30s in my Taco for the 4.88s or not. But I am looking to retain at least one locker. I know that I will have to modify the axle housing but I don't know how long it will be until I lift it and get larger tires.

I've also had the thought to sell the front and rear diffs, and put that money towards a zip locker or ARB locker.

2nd Gen 4Runner axles and differentials will not work on a 1st Gen Tacoma. They are very different.

I know the axle housing for the rear is different as is the front diff. What I was curious about was if the third member from the front will drop in to the front of the taco? Or even the carrier? IIRC, the T4R front diff is a 7.5" but I don't know about the Tacoma. I see conflicting info about the size of the rear diff as well, but this third came out of a 96 T4R that had the locker. I modified my Runner's housing for it to work, and I know I will have to do the same if I'm to have it fit in the Tacoma.

Let’s see if @Sperrunner knows. I’m not too sure but I know the clamshells are different. The Supra MKIII gears apparently will fit, but the clamshell is different.

Its all the same gears. Any 8” rear gears will fit a 8” rear. Any 7.5 will fit a 7.5. Also a 3rd gen runner front diff will just bolt in to a taco. And the runners 3rd will just bolt in

4 diffs came in a 1st gen taco.
    7.5” (only 4cyl 5lugs)
8” (which is a elocker axle)
And 8.4 or 8” non locked which is everything else

The 8” and 8.4” applies for a 3rd gen runner i think. So you go gotta know what axle it is you are pulling a diff from. Which i think is 8” is any locker axle and 8.4” or 8” no locked is any thing else

Or correct me if im wrong

So my 04 Taco with a 4 cyl. 5 sp. and 4.30 gears has an 8.4" rear end? Which means an e-locked third member isn't going to fit?

I pulled a 4.11 rear diff out of a 97 4runner non locker and wanted to bolt it into a Tacoma axle from a 96 non e-locker. I'd did not fit. The bolt pattern was smaller on the diff then it was on the axle housing.

I think. Its kinda weird. I think some trucks had a non locked 8” and some had a non locked 8.4” but idk what the reason for the difference is.

short of crawling under it and trying to guestimate a measure, is there any code on the door that will say what I should have? The truck is all stock.
