Gears grind when i shift into third

    I just recently bought a 98 tacoma sr5 and everytime i go to shift into 3rd it grinds if i dont let it wind back down. any advice on what ill have to get fixed?

    Sure, but you won't like it.
    Tranny needs third gear synchromesh replaced.
    Try to go in 3rd real easy, see if that works.
    Third gear sychros seem to be the ones that go bad most often.

    Did you buy this from a dealer, and how long ago?
    You may have recourse. You are talking major dollars to fix this.
    If no recourse, you can learn to drive it in a way that the gears don't grind, and it will go a long, long time. Forever, maybe.

    ya when i go into it easy it doesnt grind at all. i guess ill just have to deal with it until i can get the money for it.

    would if be cheaper to get a used transmission rather than try and get it fixed?

    Prolly.
    Cheapest of all is to just shift slower into third and avoid the problem.
    Check out what the other poster suggested as well.
    Dunno why third synchro is so problematic, but it is on the 2005 and up 6 speeds as well.

    Bone Stock.
    Third her is usually first to go as many noons cannot find third gear and wear it out. Or they don't dully engage it and wear out the syncro. Dunno about 2k. Talk to a tranny shop. Also, flush the trans and use decent fluids.

    Front dome light added,light reminder added,door chime mod, added 2nd gen 4runner headrests,grey wire mod, 2lo mod, more later.
    You might be able to double clutch until you get it fixed!
