Do the 10k with synthetic line

 

There's a deal on a name brand 10k that's local to me. I reached out to the guy, but so far he's been anything but helpful. I am giving him until the weekend to snap me some more pics, set a day and time this weekend to meet up. Should that fall through, I'll be going with the WARN 10k with the cable. I know that I will regret it in the long run and always feel like I should have went bigger if I chose the 8k over the 10k..especially with something like this that can literally be your life line in the right (wrong) situation.

That combined with some trips I have been discussing with some local members and family members, I am going to want a bigger winch.

Hahah I guess its a good thing I already have a winch you'll be happy with the 10k, if you end up with wire I have a warn fairlead thats meant for wire thats not being used

That will get destroyed with cable. You want a roller fairlead for cables

 

Plan is to purchase and swap out the cable with synth line before the install..

 

For the record, I've been using an aluminum hawse fairlead with steel cable for years. It doesn't even touch it if you pull straight, which you should always try to do anyway. Now that being said, the only reason I'm not using a roller (which I have in the garage) is that it wouldn't fit well on my Trail Gear bumper. I'm moving to synthetic line soon and I'll be buying a new fairlead then too

 

Excellent build, fantastic sticker (YAAAS!). I'm guessing that was custom-made?

 

Thanks man! Actually, it was a crazy deal! I bought the YAAAS sticker from @ChandlerDOOM and it turns out the Pelfreybilt bumper it was attached to came with it. I had nowhere else to put the bumper so I just left it attached and put the sticker on my truck as is!

 

Just ordered a Factor 55 flatlink from Amazon!!

Is there anything that you guys recommend before installing this bad boy in it's home? Resealing? Waterproofing?

Scrolling for some info today and I came across this:

"if you plan on "upgrading" a winch to synthetic from cable, you will need to do a couple of things, fist you will need to get a new drum that is designed for synthetic. the steel cable drums are not meant to have synthetic rope and the heat they can transfer can damage and melt the synthetic rope -i have personally seen the scaring on a synthetic rope from this. the other thing you can do is buy a second sheath and leave that on the first layers of rope on the drum but this is not a guaranteed fix."

 

I already planned on getting some 10' or so of a protective sheath for the first wrap. No way I'm getting a new drum. Ha

I haven't had any issues with my xd9000 after switching. I usually try to do short pulls rather than run it all in at once to avoid heating up. When I wrapped the new rope wrapped the first wrap on the drum with duct tape. I can't remember if the rope had a heat sheathe or not at the base. It has a sheathe at the hook end I know that. I used the TJM 18,000lb black synthetic 3/8"x100'.

 

I've owned 7 winches over the last 43 years. 5 were Warn. No one I know EVER regretted buying a Warn winch. They are more expensive for a reason.

 

I would be interested in seeing what you come up with and how you do it..

Definitely glad I bought a Warn..I don't doubt that decision at all!

 

I feel like you owned some sort of jdm type vehicle before your taco, perhaps you were a Honda enthusiast?
